Hurricane Irene never hit New York City in the apocalyptic, big-city disaster scenario that Mayor Michael Bloomberg had spelled out late last week, but the storm still managed to leave 5 million homes and businesses without power and at least two dozen dead, according to the Associated Press.
The storm caused some of the worst flooding in a century in Vermont, and also submerged small upstate New York towns that are just now able to take stock of the damage.
This ABC News report, below, shows the frightening flooding in New York and Vermont--including dramatic footage of a covered bridge washing out near Rockingham, Vermont:

A North Carolina road was completely washed out by the storm. You can see flood waters bisecting Highway 12, which connects Hatteras and Ocracoke islands to the mainland, in the video below. The collapse left more than 2,000 people on the island stranded from the North Carolina mainland. Six deaths have been reported in the state, most from falling trees.

The remnants of Irene reached Canada Monday after barreling through the northeastern United States where the storm claimed at least 18 lives and caused estimated economic damage of up to $7 billion.
Millions of people were without power along the East Coast after the huge storm -- now downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone -- passed over the Big Apple and headed for Canada.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Center warned late Sunday of "major river flooding occurring in parts of the northeast," after President Barack Obama cautioned that recovery efforts would last for "weeks or longer."

"I want people to understand that this is not over," Obama said in a short statement in the White House Rose Garden.

"I do want to underscore that the impacts of this storm will be felt for some time... Power may be out for days in some areas."

The governor of Vermont, Peter Shumlin, said his state was in "tough shape" while New York state's Andrew Cuomo warned of "tremendous flooding" in the Catskill Mountain area north of Manhattan.

The first global cyber war has begun, claim hackers

Get ready folks. This is not just a warning but also shows us this will be the very reason they decide to take away a very own internet among the Freedom of Speech we all have today.

If these hackers do exist, I would like to say one thing. Thanks for messing up our only choice of Freedom of speech that we have left.
On the other hand I seem to feel like this is the very warped frame of Politics to make us believe that the internet would be better controlled by Government.

He is one of the newest recruits to Operation Payback. In a London bedroom, the 24-year-old computer hacker is preparing his weaponry for this week's battles in an evolving cyberwar. He is a self-styled defender of free speech, his weapon a laptop and his enemy the US corporations responsible for attacking the website WikiLeaks.
He had seen the flyers that began springing up on the web in mid-September. In chatrooms, on discussion boards and inboxes from Manchester to New York to Sydney the grinning face of a Guy Fawkes mask had appeared with a call to arms. Across the world a battalion of hackers was being summoned.
"Greetings, fellow anons," it said beneath the headline Operation Payback. Alongside were a series of software programs dubbed "our weapons of choice" and a stark message: people needed to show their "hatred".
Like most international conflicts, last week's internet war began over a relatively modest squabble, escalating in days into a global fight.
Before WikiLeaks, Operation Payback's initial target was America's recording industry, chosen for its prosecutions of music file downloaders. From those humble origins, Payback's anti-censorship, anti-copyright, freedom of speech manifesto would go viral, last week pitting an amorphous army of online hackers against the US government and some of the biggest corporations in the world.
Charles Dodd, a consultant to US government agencies on internet security, said: "[The hackers] attack from the shadows and they have no fear of retaliation. There are no rules of engagement in this kind of emerging warfare."

(Reuters) - Novartis AG plans to seek regulatory approval within 18 months for a pioneering tablet containing an embedded microchip, bringing the concept of "smart-pill" technology a step closer.The initial program will use one of the Swiss firm's established drugs taken by transplant patients to avoid organ rejection. But Trevor Mundel, global head of development, believes the concept can be applied to many other pills.
"We are taking forward this transplant drug with a chip and we hope within the next 18 months to have something that we will be able to submit to the regulators, at least in Europe," Mundel told the Reuters Health Summit in New York.
"I see the promise as going much beyond that," he added.
Novartis agreed in January to spend $24 million to secure access to chip-in-a-pill technology developed by privately owned Proteus Biomedical of Redwood City, California, putting it ahead of rivals.

Nasa to develop 'hypersonic' jets that travel at 5 times the speed of sound | Mail Online

NASA is planning to build hypersonic jets that will fly through the Earth’s atmosphere and slash flight times around the world to a few hours at most.
The US space agency wants to manufacture a craft that would travel at five times the speed of sound and bring in a new age of aircraft akin to a turbo-charged Concorde.
Travelling at such speed would reduce the flight time from New York to Sydney to around two-and-a-half hours, from the 21 hours it is now.
The project is thought to be aimed at making a reusable aircraft that could fly to Mars but, as with previous space technology, it could have a huge impact upon passenger transport too.

NASA's experimental X-43A scramjet aircraft which is capable if reaching almost seven times the speed of sound

Under the NASA Aeronautics 2010 proposal, the space agency will allocate $5million per year for the next three years to make the new aircraft a reality.
The aim is to create something which can carry passengers through the atmosphere, descend and land safely before being reused.

The Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of America accused New York officials on Tuesday of turning their backs on the reconstruction of the only church destroyed in the Sept. 11 attacks, while the controversial mosque near Ground Zero moves forward. 

The sidelined project is the St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, a tiny, four-story building destroyed in 2001 when one of the World Trade Center towers fell on top of it. Nobody from the church was hurt in the attack, but the congregation has for the past eight years been trying to rebuild its house of worship. 

While the mosque project cleared red tape earlier this month, negotiations between the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey and the church stalled last year -- and will not be revived, according to government officials. Though the particulars of the two projects are completely different and on the surface unrelated, the church and its supporters see a disconnect in the way the proposals have been handled. 

An archdiocese official said Tuesday that the situation has created "consternation" for those still struggling to jump-start talks over the church.

"We have people that are saying, why isn't our church being rebuilt and why is there ... such concern for people of the mosque?" Father Alex Karloutsos, assistant to the archbishop, told FoxNews.com. He said "religious freedom" would allow a place of worship for any denomination to be built, but accused officials with the Port Authority of making no effort to help move the congregation's project along.

"Unfortunately, they have just been silent -- dead silent, actually," said Karloutsos, whose father was ordained at St. Nicholas. "They just simply forgot about the church." 

The Port Authority and the church announced a deal in July 2008 under which the Port Authority would grant land and up to $20 million to help rebuild it in a new location -- in addition, the authority was willing to pay up to $40 million to construct a bomb-proof platform underneath. 

Within a year, the deal fell through and talks ended. Port Authority officials told Fox News that the deal is dead.

Yet Obama's reaction remains clear.

There's no question this is an act of provocation and even Muslims know it.  A couple of them have written about it in the Canadian media.  But there's no doubt here, right?  By the way, the same imam has a mosque 12 blocks away from Ground Zero.  He wants to have one two blocks away, community outreach, and Obama, there you heard it, clearly enforcing it.  But then the fur flew and Saturday afternoon on CNN's Newsroom after Obama delivered his remarks about the Gulf oil spill Ed Henry talked to him about the mosque business.  He said, "What do you think about the reaction to your speech about the mosque?  What about the reaction?"

OBAMA:  Well, you know, my intention was to simply let people know what I thought, which was that in this country we treat everybody equally in accordance with the law, regardless of race, regardless of religion.  I was not commenting and I will not comment on the wisdom making a decision to put a mosque there.  I was commenting very specifically on the right that people have that dates back to our founding.  That's what our country's about.  And I think it's very important that as difficult as some of these issues are that we stay focused on who we are as a people and what our values are all about.

4 dozen names would launch Obamacare repeal

Eight more members of the U.S. House have signed on to a plan that calls for a re-vote on Obamacare, enabling members to repeal the massive nationalization program estimated to cost Americans a trillion dollars or more.
The signature total now stands at 170, just four dozen shy of the 218 needed to advance the discharge petition sponsored by U.S. Rep. Steve King, R-Iowa
The newest names are Reps. Steven C. LaTourette of Ohio, Dean Heller of Nevada, Peter T. King of New York, Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida, Lincoln Diaz-Balart of Florida, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida, Tim Murphy of Pennsylvania and Charles W. Dent of Pennsylvania.

Staffers with Kings's office said no more new names will be added while Congress is in recess now, but the campaign will ramp up again as soon as the members reassemble in September.

King also has posted a list online divided by state delegations.
The effort in the House is quickly gaining momentum even though it has been reported but little in the media. Under House rules, King's discharge petition needs 218 signatures to advance. But with that number – a majority in the 435-member body – once it moves it virtually is assured of passing, even though House Speaker Nancy Pelosi vigorously opposes it.
Sign the petition opposing Obamacare.
All of the GOP representatives and 34 Democrats opposed Obamacare when it was passed on a narrow 219-212 vote earlier this year. King said 212 representatives, at least, should be in favor of overturning it, since they previously opposed it.
Then it will be up to the four Democrat votes that would be needed to turn from endorsement to rejection for it to advance.
He also said there are a number of Democrats who supported the nationalization plan who now are running for re-election in districts where residents oppose it.

NYT/CBS Poll: 52% Say Obama Moving America Towards Socialism

clipped from www.cnsnews.com (CNSNews.com) – A New York Times/CBS News poll found that a majority of Americans, 52 percent, think the policies of President Barack Obama are moving the United States toward socialism Published April 14, the poll surveyed the political, racial, and social opinions of both the general pubic and self-described members of the tea party movement. It found that while tea party participants are generally more conservative than the broader population, they are also better educated and slightly more successful. The poll found that almost the entirety of the tea party movement – 92 percent – shared the views of most Americans that Obama was turning the United States into a socialist country. The poll asked respondents specifically whether the president’s policies “are moving the country more toward socialism.” Fifty-two percent answered “toward socialism” while only 38 percent answered “not toward socialism.”

States from New York to Hawaii that have been hard-hit by the economic downturn say they have either delayed refunds or are considering doing so because of budget shortfalls. "It's an indicator of how bad it is," says Scott Pattison, executive director of the National Association of State Budget Officers. "You know things are bad when you have to do that." New York, hit with a $9 billion deficit, may delay $500 million in refunds to keep the state from running out of cash, says Gov. David Paterson. Hawaii's Department of Taxation says some residents may not see state income tax refunds until the end of August,

Nearly 200K without power after Northeast storm

clipped from news.yahoo.com PORTLAND, Maine – Nearly 200,000 homes and businesses were still without power Monday as restoration efforts continued days after a slow-moving storm battered the Northeast with heavy snow, rain and high winds. More than 83,000 utility customers still lacked electricity early Monday in New Hampshire, the hardest-hit state. New York had about 87,000 outages, and Maine had about 16,000. At the peak of the storm, more than a million utility customers throughout the region had lost power. Hundreds of utility crews from as far away as Michigan and Maryland continued removing trees that knocked down power lines and replacing utility poles that snapped during last week's storm. Dozens of shelters provided warmth and food at fire departments, schools and other places. Another storm, this one from the east, was expected to bring more snow and rain into parts of New England on Sunday night into Monday.
