  In 2007, Maine was the first state in the nation to reject the federal real i-d act. Today, the state is complying with the federal law designed to make it harder for terrorists and illegal immigrants to get government-issued identification. However, it's proving to be a nightmare for some Mainers.
  Edwin Lively of Winslow could lose his driver's license if he isn't able to provide the required documentation needed to renew it. Lively is a veteran and has had his license since 1973. The veteran was born on a US military base in France. That based closed in 1967, leaving Lively with no way to obtain a certified copy of his birth certificate, which is one of the documents needed to prove US citizenship. Lively has been given a 60-day extension on his license, however he still doesn't know if he will be able to renew his license for good.

clipped from www.wnd.com 'Schools therefore cannot segregate students based on sexual orientation' AUGUSTA, Maine - A lawyer for the Maine Human Rights Commission told members of the state board today that requiring all students to use "biology-based" restrooms and locker rooms in the state's schools is illegal and cannot be allowed to continue. "Schools cannot discriminate against sexual identity or gender identification. Schools therefore cannot segregate students based on sexual orientation and identity," commission legal counsel John Gause said at today's commission meeting, where he was unsuccessful in convincing the board to adopt immediately a set of recommendations. "I think we need to have a public hearing. That's the only way to make sure we issue guidance that applies to everyone. If you're eliminating one group in favor of another group, you're giving up part of your freedom," he said.

Nearly 200K without power after Northeast storm

clipped from news.yahoo.com PORTLAND, Maine – Nearly 200,000 homes and businesses were still without power Monday as restoration efforts continued days after a slow-moving storm battered the Northeast with heavy snow, rain and high winds. More than 83,000 utility customers still lacked electricity early Monday in New Hampshire, the hardest-hit state. New York had about 87,000 outages, and Maine had about 16,000. At the peak of the storm, more than a million utility customers throughout the region had lost power. Hundreds of utility crews from as far away as Michigan and Maryland continued removing trees that knocked down power lines and replacing utility poles that snapped during last week's storm. Dozens of shelters provided warmth and food at fire departments, schools and other places. Another storm, this one from the east, was expected to bring more snow and rain into parts of New England on Sunday night into Monday.

And the ongoing debate over healthcare reform, financial regulatory reform, jobs bills and education fixes could postpone action on the floor for many months.
