US leaves space for Russia

By the end of this year, NASA will no longer be able to send humans into space.
According to Barack Obama’s plan, responsibility will go to private companies, which are expected to come up with cheaper ways to ferry astronauts to low-Earth orbit.
“They know they have a big step to take if they are going to put humans into space… They have a lot of work to do,” says NASA Astronaut Sunita Williams.
No one can say for sure when the private American companies will come up with a new spaceship.
For years to come, it will be the Russian Soyuz spacecraft, which is going to be the only means for people to reach the International Space Station, which is perfectly fine with the leaders of Russia and the US, but does not sit well with many Americans.

The coming year will be an important one for space weather as the Sun pulls out of a trough of low activity and heads into a long-awaited and possibly destructive period of turbulence

.Many people may be surprised to learn that the Sun, rather than burn with faultless consistency, goes through moments of calm and tempest.
But two centuries of observing sunspots -- dark, relatively cool marks on the solar face linked to mighty magnetic forces -- have revealed that our star follows a roughly 11-year cycle of behaviour.
The latest cycle began in 1996 and for reasons which are unclear has taken longer than expected to end.
Now, though, there are more and more signs that the Sun is shaking off its torpor and building towards "Solar Max," or the cycle's climax, say experts.
"The latest prediction looks at around midway 2013 as being the maximum phase of the solar cycle," said Joe Kunches of NASA's Space Weather Prediction Center.

Nasa to develop 'hypersonic' jets that travel at 5 times the speed of sound | Mail Online

NASA is planning to build hypersonic jets that will fly through the Earth’s atmosphere and slash flight times around the world to a few hours at most.
The US space agency wants to manufacture a craft that would travel at five times the speed of sound and bring in a new age of aircraft akin to a turbo-charged Concorde.
Travelling at such speed would reduce the flight time from New York to Sydney to around two-and-a-half hours, from the 21 hours it is now.
The project is thought to be aimed at making a reusable aircraft that could fly to Mars but, as with previous space technology, it could have a huge impact upon passenger transport too.

NASA's experimental X-43A scramjet aircraft which is capable if reaching almost seven times the speed of sound

Under the NASA Aeronautics 2010 proposal, the space agency will allocate $5million per year for the next three years to make the new aircraft a reality.
The aim is to create something which can carry passengers through the atmosphere, descend and land safely before being reused.

  Alan Boyle writes: When the late show is over, turn off the TV, step outside and catch a late, late show in the night sky. It's prime time for the Perseids, arguably the most accessible meteor shower of the year.
  "If you want comfort, this is the shower to see," said Bill Cooke, the head of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at Marshall Space Flight Center in Alabama.
  Every night, Cooke has been turning on a couple of all-sky cameras in Alabama and Georgia to catch meteor trails as they streak through the sky. This year's been a great one for the Perseids, in large part because the moon doesn't glare in the sky when the show is getting good.
  The absolute best viewing is expected Thursday night - actually, between midnight Thursday and dawn on Friday. Perseid meteors should be visible every night from now until next week. At its peak, observers could see at least one meteor every minute, Cooke told me. You just have to know where and when to look - and the experience goes much more smoothly if you make a few preparations.

  First, some basic facts about meteors: As explained in our interactive graphic, meteor showers occur when our planet plows through a trail of space grit left behind by a comet. Those bits of grit zip through the upper atmosphere at speeds of more than 125,000 miles per hour, lighting up a trail of ionized air.
  Don't worry: There's virtually no risk of being hit by one of these falling stars. Most of this grit burns up dozens of miles above us. A week ago, Cooke's camera in Alabama snapped a picture of a fireball lighting up the sky much more brightly than any planet - and even that sparkler self-destructed at an altitude of about 56 miles.

Britain could face widespread power blackouts and be left without critical communication signals for long periods of time, after the earth is hit by a once-in-a-generation “space storm”, Nasa has warned.

Senior space agency scientists believe the Earth will be hit with unprecedented levels of magnetic energy from solar flares after the Sun wakes “from a deep slumber” sometime around 2013, The Daily Telegraph can disclose. In a new warning, Nasa said the super storm would hit like “a bolt of lightning” and could cause catastrophic consequences for the world’s health, emergency services and national security unless precautions are taken. Scientists believe it could damage everything from emergency services’ systems, hospital equipment, banking systems and air traffic control devices, through to “everyday” items such as home computers, iPods and Sat Navs. Dr Fisher, a Nasa scientist for 20 years, said these two events would combine in 2013 to produce huge levels of radiation.

Space Shuttle Atlantis – Last trip to space

Conditions at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida look favorable for the Space Shuttle Atlantis to lift off on her final voyage to space. After she flies, there will be two remaining shuttle missions, both taking place before the end of the year. During her 25 years of voyages to space, Atlantis has accomplished many things. Does anyone remember the Magellan Mission to Venus? It was the first planetary explorer spacecraft and it was the first to be launched from a space shuttle. Atlantis carried Magellan to low Earth orbit on May 4, 1989 and set on it’s way from her cargo bay. Godspeed, Atlantis. Keep your crew safe and when you return from space for the last time, you can rest in peace.

Rogue satellite may impact cable TV in U.S.

clipped from www.cnn.com (CNN) -- A rogue satellite is floating through space, threatening to push into another satellite's orbit and interrupt cable TV programming in the United States. But the company that owns the satellite says they've known about the problem for more than a month and that the impact on cable TV will be minimal. Galaxy 15, a satellite that catches cable signals and beams them back to Earth, broke loose from its orbit and began a slow, out-of-control drift at about a tenth of a degree per day, according to its owners, communications company Intelsat. Yves Feltes, a spokesman for SES World Skies -- which owns the other satellite -- issued a statement saying his company is "doing our utmost in order to mitigate any interference into any of our traffic in close coordination with our customers and our competitor Intelstat." See NASA's tracking map of satellites orbiting Earth. At that time, they announced the problem and began moving customers to another satellite, Galaxy 12.

The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The computer model used by Gross and his colleagues to determine the effects of the Chile earthquake effect also found that it should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds).   The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced. It is offset from the Earth's north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters). Strong earthquakes have altered Earth's days and its axis in the past. The 9.1 Sumatran earthquake in 2004, which set off a deadly tsunami, should have shortened Earth's days by 6.8 microseconds

According to Manber, the Russians also have the best transportation infrastructure. However, Manber applauds the Obama’s lack of a clear plan. Because, you know, we should privatize spaceflight: The Mojave Spaceport is the hotbed for private space flight R&D in the United States.
