President Barack Obama called on Syria's Bashar al-Assad to leave power Thursday, as the United States announced new sanctions on the Syrian regime, which is accused of killing some 2,000 people in six months of anti-government unrest.
"The future of Syria must be determined by its people, but President Bashar al-Assad is standing in their way," Obama said in a statement released by the White House Thursday morning. "His calls for dialogue and reform have rung hollow while he is imprisoning, torturing, and slaughtering his own people."
"For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside," Obama's statement continued.
"The transition to democracy in Syria has begun, and it's time for Assad to get out of the way," Secretary of State Hillary Clinton echoed in an on-camera statement at the State Department shortly after the White House announcement, which you can see in the video below.

Unrest in Egypt: What’s going on?

For the past few years Governments and the worlds population have tried so hard to ignore what happens with Big Governments. History time and time again proves this and yet, it's happening again.

As so many keep trying to think on fluffy bunnies and don't pay attention. It makes me wonder what they will do when this actually hits home. The muslim people have been ruled with an iron thumb for so long now. You can't help but to feel sorry for all the lies they have been forced to live under.

Yet even here in America, what so many are trying to do is bring so-called change. This is exactly what that change is. Big Government takes away Freedom. This is what happens under big government and the people have finally had enough.

Those that think we need more Government in America? This is the end result.

Michele Dunne is a senior associate at the Carnegie Endowment for Peace. She has served as a specialist on Middle East affairs with the White House and the State Department, and has written widely on Arab politics, and political and economic reform. The Lookout asked her to explain what's going on in Egypt, and what it means for America.

LOOKOUT: What are the protesters angry about, and what do they want done?
M.D.: Protesters have a large number of economic, political, and human-rights grievances. Widespread youth unemployment, rigged parliamentary elections in November 2010, and the prospect of President Mubarak (in power since 1981) beginning another term--or being replaced by his son--are the sparks that set these demonstrations off. The demonstrators are asking for Mubarak to step down and make way for an interim government to prepare for free elections.

LOOKOUT: Is there a real chance that Mubarak's government might fall?
M.D.: Yes, there is a real possibility, but that does not seem to be imminent yet. As in Tunisia, the regime would begin to be uncertain if internal security services could not handle demonstrations and the army were called in. Armies generally don't like firing on their own civilians and sometimes will choose keeping the loyalty of the population over defending an unpopular ruler.
LOOKOUT: If so, what might replace Mubarak's regime? What role might ElBaradei play?
M.D.: There is a shadow government and parliament, formed in December, that has positioned itself as the opposition party with which the government can negotiate if things reach that point.  But things are very fluid right now. ElBaradei could possibly play a leadership role within the opposition, although up until now he has been more effective at articulating popular grievances than at organizing or leading opposition groups.
LOOKOUT: How might a shift in power affect U.S. interests?
M.D.: U.S. interests are being challenged here. The United States has been tepid in supporting human rights and democracy in Egypt for years and has to deal with the resentment among Egyptians because of that. Partly for that reason, and partly because of the close association of the United States with Israel, any alternate group that comes to power might distance itself from the United States to some extent.

US To Sell $60B In Advanced Arms To Saudi - Politics News Story - WSOC Charlotte

The Obama administration notified Congress on Wednesday that it plans to sell up to $60 billion in advanced weaponry to Saudi Arabia in one of the largest-ever single U.S. arms sales, a deal intended to counter the rising influence of Iran.
State Department and Pentagon officials told lawmakers that the sales that will include 84 new F-15 fighter jets, upgrades to 70 existing Saudi F-15s, 190 helicopters and a wide array of missiles, bombs and delivery systems, as well as accessories such as night-vision goggles and radar warning systems. The sale, first revealed in September, has been in the works for months and is designed to strengthen the defense forces of Saudi Arabia, a longtime U.S. ally, and counter Iran as a regional power in the Persian Gulf. "This proposed sale has tremendous significance from a strategic regional perspective," said Andrew Shapiro, the assistant secretary of state for political and military affairs who announced the deal. "It will send a strong message to countries in the region that we are committed to support the security of our key partners and allies in the Arabian Gulf and broader Middle East," Shapiro told reporters. "And it will enhance Saudi Arabia's ability to deter and defend against threats to its borders and to its oil infrastructure, which is critical to our economic interests."

Mexico's drug war takes growing toll on Americans

North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) Lo...Image via Wikipedia

MEXICO CITY -- More Americans in Mexico are falling victim to a wave of drug violence sweeping the country, a change driven home by the recent killing of a U.S. Consulate employee and her husband who were gunned down after leaving a children's birthday party.

The number of U.S. citizens killed in Mexico has more than doubled to 79 in 2009 from 35 in 2007, according to the U.S. State Department's annual count. No figures were available for the first two months of 2010.

While only some of the killings are specifically listed as "executions" or "drug-related," the increase in homicides appears to be related to drug battles. In Ciudad Juarez, the northern border city hardest hit by drug violence and where the consulate employee was killed, homicides of Americans rose to 23 in 2009 from two in 2007.

The annual murder rate for the estimated 500,000 American citizens in Mexico at any one time has risen - but still remains lower than in some U.S. cities

OBAMA TEAM LAUNCHES RHETORICAL BROADSIDE AGAINST ISRAEL ON EVE OF TRIP TO WORLD’S LARGEST MUSLIM COUNTRY

The Obama administration has launched a rhetorical broadside against the Jewish State of Israel on the eve of the President’s March 21st departure for Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority country. Currying favor with the world’s 1.3 billion Muslims by denouncing and condemning Israel with fewer than six million Jews might sound like a good idea to those in the White House and State Department. But it is not. It is a bizarre and dangerous policy this administration has embarked upon and it must be firmly resisted.
First of all, the administration’s approach is bizarre in that it has “condemned” Israel for building homes in its own capital and thus threatening to derail the peace process with the Palestinians. Actually, the Palestinians have refused for a full year to come to the peace table
The God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob tells us clearly in Genesis 12:1-3 that He will bless those who bless Israel, and curse those who curse Israel.

US says Iran human rights record "degenerated"

Matthew 24:9 Then shall they deliver you up to be afflicted, and shall kill you: and you shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake. 10 And then shall many be offended, and shall betray one another, and shall hate one another. 11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many. 12 And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold. 13 But he that shall endure to the end, the same shall be saved. 14 And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness to all nations; and then shall the end come.

US says Iran human rights record

WASHINGTON (AFP) –
The United States charged Thursday that Iran's already poor human rights record had "degenerated" in 2009, particularly with a security crackdown after disputed presidential elections.

The sharp criticism of Iran, contained in an annual State Department report on human rights abuses worldwide, comes as the Obama administration pushes for tougher sanctions against the Islamic Republic over its nuclear ambitions.

"The government's poor human rights record degenerated during the year, particularly after the disputed June presidential elections," the State Department said.

Dozens, if not scores were killed, and at least 4,000 individuals had been detained by August, it said.

It also referred to the Iranian government's crackdown on new media, such as Facebook, Twitter, and other social networking sites.

"The government continued to restrict freedom of religion severely, particularly against Bahais and, increasingly, Christians," it added.

Iran claims launch of turtles, rodent into space - CNN.com

Rocket launchingImage by idua_japan via Flickr

  • "(CNN) -- Iran said Wednesday it had launched a rocket carrying a rodent, two turtles and some worms into orbit, claiming it as a successful advance in a space program that has raised international concerns. The official Islamic Republic News Agency said the "home-built" Kavoshgar-3, or Explorer-3 rocket was launched at a ceremony to commemorate this month's anniversary of the 1979 Islamic Revolution that overthrew Iran's monarchy. Iran, which is trying to contain a political crisis after violent protests erupted following the disputed re-election of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, is expected to mount a series of high profile events to mark the anniversary. State-run Press TV quoted Iranian Defense Minister Brig. Gen. Ahmad Vahidi declaring the launch a success and describing Iran's space program as "peaceful." "Iran will not tolerate any un-peaceful use [of space] by any country," he said. Last year the U.S. State Department expressed "grave concern" over Iran's announcement it was planning a series of satellite launches. "Developing a space launch vehicle that could... put a satellite into orbit could possibly lead to development of a ballistic missile system," State Department deputy spokesman Robert Wood said at the time. "So that's a grave concern to us." The Pentagon called the plan "clearly a concern of ours.""

Thousands From Terror-Sponsoring Nations Entering U.S. on 'Diversity Visas'

Old passport stamps & visas 6Image by sleepymyf via Flickr

  • "The State Department is planning to welcome thousands of immigrants from terror-watch list countries into the United States this year through a "diversity visa" lottery -- a giant legal loophole some lawmakers say is a "serious national security threat" that has gone unchecked for years. Ostensibly designed to increase ethnic diversity among immigrants, the program invites in thousands of poorly educated laborers with few job skills -- and that's only the beginning of its problems, according to lawmakers and government investigations. "There are a lot of holes in this program in terms of security and in terms of fraud," said Rep. Bob Goodlatte, R-Va., who has written legislation aimed at killing the lottery. Now, in the wake of the botched Christmas Day terror attack that emerged from Nigeria and Yemen, members of Congress are worried the system could be vulnerable to radicals looking to "play" the visa lottery as a means of reaching the U.S. Here's how it works: to avoid getting stuck with 3.5 million others on a visa waiting list, hundreds of thousands of people put their names into the separate diversity lottery, which rewards countries that typically see low levels of immigration to the U.S. Immediate family are allowed to join lottery winners. Countries like China, where lots of immigrants originate, are excluded. Then a computer in Kentucky picks names at random from the qualified applicants, who need only a high school degree or two years at a job that requires two years of experience. The program accounts for about 10 percent of all immigrant visas each year. Included in the lottery are all four countries the U.S considers state sponsors of terror -- Iran, Sudan, Cuba, and Syria -- and 13 of the 14 nations that are coming under special monitoring from the Transportation Security Administration as founts of terrorism. Pakistan is excluded because, like China, it sends over tens of thousands of immigrants each year and doesn't need to be in the lottery. Among the winners for 2010 are: Nigeria: 6,0
