Following the tsunami warning, many in the town of Cilacap, closest to the quake's epicenter, poured into the grand mosque. When word finally came that the threat of a big wave had passed, they erupted in cheers, embraced one another or fell to their knees in thanks.

"We were very scared after seeing what happened in Japan - and also Aceh, of course," said Sukitno, a resident. "But God listened to our prayers. He spared us!"

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.7 quake that hit just after 3 a.m. was centered 200 miles (318 kilometers) off southern Java and 15 miles (24 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

Moderate earthquake hits North India

An earthquake of moderate intensity hit North India on Monday evening. According to the Indian Meteorological Department the quake was of 5.7 magnitude on the richter scale.
According to a Met department official the epicentre was in the Indo-Nepal Border near Uttarakhand, which lies in the seismic zone.

MOUNT MERAPI, Indonesia – Searing gas avalanched down an Indonesian volcano with a thunderous roar, torching houses and trees and incinerating villagers as they fled Mount Merapi's worst eruption in a century. Scores of bodies found Friday raised the death toll to 122.
The injured — with clothes, blankets and even mattresses fused to their skin by the 1,400 degree Fahrenheit (750 degree Celsius) heat — were carried away on stretchers following the first big explosion just before midnight.
All Friday, Merapi shot towering plumes of ash that dusted the windshields of cars 300 miles (480 kilometers) away. Bursts of hot clouds occasionally interrupted aid efforts, with rescuers screaming "Watch out! Hot cloud!"
The intensifying eruptions have baffled scientists who have monitored the mountain for years and left them uncertain what to expect. Dozens of explosions that followed Merapi's initial blast Oct. 26 had been predicted to ease pressure behind a magma dome.
The danger zone where residents have been ordered to flee has now been expanded to 12 miles (20 kilometers) from the crater.
Friday's explosion — said by volcanologists to be the biggest since the 1870s — hit hardest in Bronggang, a village nine miles (15 kilometers) from the crater. Soldiers joined the rescue operations, pulling at least 78 bodies from homes and streets blanketed by ash up to one foot (30 centimeters) deep.

Major Earthquake Strikes Indonesia, But Damage Appears Moderate

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 7.7 magnitude earthquake occurred at sea about 215 kilometers northwest of the Indonesian island of Sumatra. The quake was felt throughout northern Sumatra and in Malaysia. Local news reports say that patients from some area hospitals were evacuated and that some residents fled to high ground in case of a tsunami. Electricity in some areas was cut off but so far no major damage has been reported. The Indonesia Meteorology and Geophysics Agency issued a tsunami warning following the quake, but lifted it two hours later. "Obviously after several years here we're kind of used to aftershocks. People react in a different way,"

Deforestation conference to turn plans to action

Ministers from countries of the Amazon and Congo river basins and Indonesia - whose massive forests, most at risk, are at the heart of efforts to end deforestation - were among those attending the one-day conference. A follow-up meeting is scheduled for May in Oslo, Norway. "The forest in danger. Massive planet-wide destruction continues," France's influential environment minister Jean-Louis Borloo said to reporters Wednesday ahead of the conference. The conference, with closed-door working groups, is looking to translate measures adopted at the U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen in December into concrete mechanisms - and funds. Indonesia hit by 6.4-magnitude earthquake

There were no immediate reports of injuries, deaths, or damages on the island nation. The quake struck at 9:57 a.m. local time (7:57 p.m. ET Saturday). The epicenter was 285 kilometers (180 miles) southeast of Ternate, on Indonesia's Moluccas island group, and 2,415 kilometers (1,500 miles) east of Jakarta, the nation's capital. The quake struck at a depth of 52.4 kilometers (32.6 miles). No tsunami warning was issued following the quake.
