Laser–Machine Gun Mashup Tested on ‘Pirate Ships’

See the full article at the link below.
http://www.wired.com/dangerroom/2011/09/lasers-versus-pirates

Now we know what the Navy plans to do with its experimental hybrid of laser cannon and machine gun: zap pirate ships.
Two defense giants, Boeing and BAE Systems, announced late last month that they would team up on a $2.8 million Navy contract for a prototype version of BAE’s Mk-38 25-mm machine gun with a little upgrade: a death ray. As the companies excitedly explained, the new gun would protect surface ships from pretty much everything, from enemy boats to small drones.
What the companies weren’t letting on was that they had already tested the machine-laser-gun a month before the announcement. And in tests that BAE — hardly an uninterested party — claims were successful, the new Mk-38 took on its most likely adversary: pirate skiffs.
In late June, the waters of the Choctawatchee Bay near Florida’s Elgin Air Force Base stood in for the Gulf of Aden, as ersatz pirate ships “swarmed” amidst dense “civilian” maritime traffic to harass a mock Navy “platform” armed with the laser gun. The enhanced version of the Mk-38 used its lasers to fix the enemy targets for bursts of machine gun fire, before switching up to laser mode to “defeat the targets” with a “high beam-quality 10-kilowatt laser,” BAE spokeswoman Stephanie Bissell Serkhoshian told Danger Room.

Sarasota and Pasco County Florida Sheriffs targeted by CAIR

300pxsImage via WikipediaSee the link for the full article.
http://www.teapartynation.com/profiles/blogs/sarasota-and-pasco-county
Florida has historically been the center for jihadi activities since 1990. Eleven of the nineteen 9/11 hijackers trained in Florida before the attack. Three of the pilots including Mohammed Atta, the leader of the 9/11 attack, learned how to pilot the jet aircraft used on 9/11 at a flight school located in Sarasota, Florida. The Islamic Society of Sarasota-Bradenton helped raise funds for the terrorist group HAMAS two years ago.
Given all of this you would think that Sheriff Tom Knight's efforts to train his deputies on how to recognize shariah Islamists would be welcomed by everyone, especially Muslims, who have been the victims of attacks around the world. Well not so. The Council on American Islamic Relations in Tampa (CAIR-Tampa) wants this type of training to stop all across Florida. They have singled out Sheriffs Tom Knight from Sarasota and Bob White from Pasco County. What is their crime? Their efforts to protect and defend citizens against acts of terrorism by training their deputies on how to recognize suspicious activity.
According to the CAIR-Tampa website:
"Law Enforcement Trainings about "Radical Muslims" - We reference two examples of a cottage industry made up of anti-Muslim groups and individuals, who sell themselves as "experts" on radical Islam and Muslims, and then offer trainings to law enforcement agencies throughout Florida. Sarasota County Sheriff's Office has already done this and now Pasco County Sheriff's Office may be doing the same. The DHS representative at the meeting was aware of this and has pledged to contact the Sheriff's offices with alternative trainings by the DHS."
The expert they are referring to is Sam Kharoba, President and founder of the Florida based Counter Terrorism Operations Center. Sam felt compelled after 9/11 to defend America against future attacks by shariah Islamists. A former computer programmer he developed a software program to help law enforcement do online searches using Muslim names and aliases.  Sam, using his skills, began teaching law enforcement, the military and other security agencies how to recognize individuals and groups who have become radicalized to the point of taking action against civilians or facilities. His lecture series has been embraced by those in the counter and anti-terrorism business nationally.
As has been reported, CAIR has been identified by the FBI as a front group for the Muslim Brotherhood. CAIR leaders have been linked to the Department of State designated terrorist organization HAMAS. CAIR's efforts have been and remain focused on keeping the U.S. Department of Homeland Security from doing its job. CAIR is in the forefront of efforts to ham string law enforcement. They do this by providing "Muslim sensitivity" training. This is akin to the Mafia training the FBI on "Italian sensitivity".
CAIR-Tampa has joined with other CAIR chapters nationwide to prevent Americans Muslims from talking to the FBI. On their website the following warning appears:

If The FBI Contacts You - Contact Us!

"There have been recent concerns over the recent "foiled plots" by the FBI. Particularly, CAIR criticizes the FBI for its use of agent provocateurs specifically targeting American Muslims and entrapping them in "manufactured" crimes they never intended to commit in the first place.

While there is a legitimate use of informants by law enforcement agencies, a fine line is crossed when those agencies target a specific community and create the crime they are trying to prevent. In many cases where the FBI has "foiled a plot," they have actually provided the motivation and the necessary resources to carry out the crime through agent provocateurs."

Geologist: Shaking Wasnt Florida Earthquake - WFTV Orlando

Atlantic Ocean at Marineland, FloridaImage via WikipediaI don't live here, but I did live closer to an Air Force Base that seemed to be testing engines all the time. They do sound a lot like this with ground movement type rumbling. Not sure this is the case. But I did think it to be worthy of placing up here on Today's World News and Info.

Who knows, Maybe it was HAARP trying to make an Earthquake and it didn't work. lol.

http://www.wftv.com/countybycounty/27239681/detail.html
Investigators are trying to solve a bizarre mystery in Flagler County. A wave of people called 911 around 9:30am Friday to report the ground shaking in Flagler County. The calls all came from the Hammock area of Palm Coast (see map).
However, people in the north Daytona area, as well as in Deltona and as far north as St. Augustine, said they felt it as well. Many people were worried that the shaking was an earthquake. The Emergency Management Office was on the phone all day trying to figure out the cause of the shaking. Residents said that buildings were shaking, and even a dispatcher in the county felt it happen."I live alone and I'm blind, and a while ago the house was shaking, do you happen to know?" a caller asked a 911 dispatcher."I'm not sure. We're actually getting quite a few calls about it now. We're having someone check it out, OK?" the dispatcher said. The 911 call was one of about a dozen calls that poured into Flagler County. An unexplained phenomenon, described as everything from a low rumble to a window shaking movement, rattled residents from St. Augustine to the Volusia County.

Real ID is here, and these poor people don't have a choice in the matter.

Driver's license changes taking effect

SOUTH SHORE - Anyone who walks into the Hillsborough County Tax Collector's Office to renew a driver's license is likely to find the requirements have changed quite a bit since their last trip.

Courtesy of the state's effort to comply with the federal Real ID Act, a number of original documents are now required to prove identity. For some, the documentation is simple: a Social Security card, birth certificate and two proofs of residency. For others, however, the list can also include marriage licenses and divorce decrees.
The Congressional act is designed to bolster national security, and Westberry said Real ID also protects people.
To find out more about the new driver's license laws, visit gathergoget .com. Information on the license requirements is also available on the county's website at hillstax.org.

Tar balls moving onto Navarre Beach; storm halts oil skimming

  • read more on www.nwfdailynews.com
BP and the Coast Guard sent oil-scooping skimming ships in the Gulf of Mexico back to shore Tuesday because nasty weather from Tropical Storm Alex churned up rough seas and powerful winds.
U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Dave French said all efforts had been halted for now off the Louisiana coast. Efforts also had been halted off the coasts of Florida, Alabama and Louisiana.
French said workers were using the time off the water to replenish supplies and perform maintenance work on equipment.

Tropical Storm Alex Slows Oil Spill Cleanup

With Tropical Storm Alex expected to reach hurricane strength today, BP and the Coast Guard ordered oil-scooping ships in the Gulf of Mexico back to shore as the storm churned up rough seas and powerful winds.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Dave French said all efforts had been halted for now off the Louisiana coast, as well as the coasts of Florida , Alabama and Mississippi.
"We're ready to go as soon as conditions allow us to get those people back out and fighting this oil spill," French told the Associated Press. The loss of skimming work combined with 25 mph gusts driving water into the coast has left beaches in the region especially vulnerable. Alabama 's normally white beaches were streaked with long lines of oil, and tar balls collected on the sand. One swath of beach 40 feet wide was stained brown and mottled with globs of oil matted together.

Globs of oil on Pensacola's pristine white sand beaches

Pensacola Beach, part of the "Emerald Coa...Image via Wikipedia

  • PENSACOLA, Fla. – This morning residents and tourists in Pensacola Beach awoke to the day they long feared.
The high tide, plus southeast winds overnight, brought globs of oil onto the pristine white sand beaches here. The oil is now fouling those beaches for as one official said, "as far as the eye can see."
Photo by Mark Potter/ NBC News
Globs of oil washed up on Pensacola Beach Wednesday morning - fouling the pristine white sand beaches.
All along the water line this morning, tar has been washing ashore. You can see it in the surf – it is all over the beach. It is sticky, brown and running in lines all along the waterline, in front of the hotels and near Pensacola's famous fishing pier.
This morning, there were a few people out on the beaches, walking, looking at the oil and shaking their heads, but no one is going in the water.
Clean-up crews are here and starting to work on the beaches. Some skimmer boats could be seen off in the horizon, trying to catch the oil as it comes ashore.
Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy
But when I got out here early this morning, shortly after dawn, there were no skimmer boats out there catching the oil, it came ashore unimpeded.
The fact that the skimmer boats are offshore suggests there is probably more oil still coming in. The wind continues to blow from the southeast, pushing whatever oil there is toward the shore. So this is something that could continue throughout the day. But already the beaches are fouled and swimmers are not able to go into the water.

Workers clean up patches of oil Tuesday on the beach at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

(CNN) -- Oil spill cleanup is under way at many beaches along the Gulf Coast, and beach-bound travelers are keeping a close eye on coastal conditions.

Here are some of the latest updates from destinations affected by the oil disaster:

Florida's Emerald Coast

Small bits of tar were found at Henderson Beach State Park over the weekend, according to the Emerald Coast Convention and Visitors bureau. "These were easily removed, and no further oil has been spotted," said a post earlier this week on the bureau's website.

Pensacola and Perdido Key, Florida

The water at Pensacola Beach is open Wednesday for swimming and fishing, according to the Pensacola Bay Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Space Shuttle Atlantis – Last trip to space

clipped from www.ldjackson.net

AtlantisI would be severely amiss if I failed to mention the milestone that is scheduled to take place later this afternoon. Conditions at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida look favorable for the Space Shuttle Atlantis to lift off on her final voyage to space. After she flies, there will be two remaining shuttle missions, both taking place before the end of the year.

During her 25 years of voyages to space, Atlantis has accomplished manyAtlantis and Magellan things. Does anyone remember the Magellan Mission to Venus? It was the first planetary explorer spacecraft and it was the first to be launched from a space shuttle. Atlantis carried Magellan to low Earth orbit on May 4, 1989 and set on it’s way from her cargo bay.

Atlantis and Magellan

Godspeed, Atlantis. Keep your crew safe and when you return from space for the last time, you can rest in peace.

Wholesale prices rise in March as food costs jump

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Wholesale prices rose more than expected last month as food prices surged by the most in 26 years. But excluding food and energy, prices were nearly flat.

The Labor Department said the Producer Price Index rose by 0.7 percent in March, compared to analysts' forecasts of a 0.4 percent rise. A rise in gas prices also helped push up the index.

Still, there was little sign of budding inflation in the report. Excluding volatile food and energy costs, wholesale prices rose by 0.1 percent, matching analysts' expectations.

Food prices jumped by 2.4 percent in March, the most since January 1984. Vegetable prices soared by more than 49 percent, the most in 15 years. A cold snap wiped out much of Florida's tomato and other vegetable crops at the beginning of this year.

Gasoline prices rose 2.1 percent, the department said, the fifth rise in six months.

But with unemployment high and credit tight, consumers' spending power is crimped

Tornadoes Whip Through South, at Least 12 Dead

One of several tornadoes observed by the VORTE...Image via Wikipedia

clipped from abcnews.go.com

The powerful storms that spawned dozens of tornadoes throughout the South and caused the deaths of at least 12 people left a stunning trail of destruction and heartache.

Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour described the aftermath as "the obliteration of a small community."

Officials have so far counted 61 tornadoes in nine states as the storm moved through Mississippi and into Florida and South Carolina Sunday.

In Mississippi, where an astounding 32 twisters were reported, residents said it looked as if the sky was falling as a tornado chased them down the road. Winds were clocked upward of 160 mph, and one tornado had a base one and a half miles wide.

"We just prayed the whole way through," said Chatawa, Miss., resident Regina Weeks, who survived the tornadoes by huddling into a small bathroom with four of her relatives.
