Louisiana residents evacuate as spillway fills lowlands - CNN.com

Unleashed by its U.S. Army minders, the Mississippi River poured across Louisiana lowlands Monday on its way to inundate thousands of homes and businesses as the Corps of Engineers fights to spare Baton Rouge and New Orleans.
"Hope you appreciate this Baton Rouge. You're welcome," read one sign posted outside a home in the path of the floodwater.
St. Martin Parish President Guy Cormier said about three-quarters of his constituents' homes are expected to suffer water damage after the weekend opening of the Morganza Spillway by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The controlled release of water from the swollen Mississippi has lowered projected flood levels for cities downstream -- but the lowered crests are little consolation to those living along the Atchafalaya River basin, where the water is being diverted.
"It just tears my heart up to know that these people's lives are fixing to change," Cormier said.
And Krotz Springs, about 20 miles down the Atchafalaya, Mayor Carroll Snyder told CNN that workers are scrambling to put together a temporary levee to protect about 240 homes on the south side of town.

clipped from www.nytimes.com The government said Thursday that BP’s oil well in the Gulf of Mexico would be left closed off and unattended if a storm that is headed for the area forced ships to evacuate. At the well site, 50 miles off the Louisiana coast, most work was halted Thursday as a newly formed tropical depression threatened to delay for a week or more the effort to permanently seal off the gusher. The National Weather Service said on Thursday that the tropical depression, the third so far in what is expected to be a busy hurricane season, had formed in the Bahamas. Its track was expected to run to the northwest into the Gulf of Mexico. A spokesman for the private weather service Accuweather said the storm would probably intensify and become a tropical storm, with winds of perhaps 50 miles per hour. It will probably reach the area of the well site late Saturday or early Sunday, the spokesman said.

  BP and the Coast Guard sent oil-scooping skimming ships in the Gulf of Mexico back to shore Tuesday because nasty weather from Tropical Storm Alex churned up rough seas and powerful winds.
  U.S. Coast Guard Lt. Dave French said all efforts had been halted for now off the Louisiana coast. Efforts also had been halted off the coasts of Florida, Alabama and Louisiana.
  French said workers were using the time off the water to replenish supplies and perform maintenance work on equipment.

  "We're ready to go as soon as conditions allow us to get those people back out and fighting this oil spill," French told the Associated Press. The loss of skimming work combined with 25 mph gusts driving water into the coast has left beaches in the region especially vulnerable. Alabama 's normally white beaches were streaked with long lines of oil, and tar balls collected on the sand. One swath of beach 40 feet wide was stained brown and mottled with globs of oil matted together.

Obama ban on deepwater drilling blocked

clipped from www.msnbc.msn.com NEW ORLEANS - A federal judge Tuesday ruled against the Obama administration's six-month moratorium on deepwater drilling in the wake of the BP oil spill. The White House, which had hoped the ban would provide time to ensure other wells are operating safely, immediately said it would appeal. The ruling comes in a lawsuit filed by drilling companies to reverse the ban imposed by the  Department of Interior, which halted the approval of any new permits for deepwater drilling and suspended drilling at 33 exploratory wells in the Gulf. A federal judge in Louisiana granted the drillers' request for a preliminary restraining order that would prevent the ban from taking effect until a trial is held. He did not set a trial date. District Judge Martin Feldman said the Interior Department failed to provide adequate reasoning and that the moratorium seems to assume that because one rig failed, all companies and rigs doing deepwater drilling pose an imminent danger.

New scale of disaster looms in Gulf of Mexico

clipped from news.yahoo.com NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana (AFP) – Concern grew Sunday that the US Gulf coast is facing a whole new level of environmental disaster after the best short-term fix for a massive oil spill ran into serious trouble. BP's giant containment box lay idle on the seabed as engineers furiously tried to figure out how to stop it clogging with ice crystals. The British energy giant, which owns the lion's share of the leaking oil and has accepted responsibility for the clean-up, has tried to banish the notion that the dome is a "silver bullet" to end the crisis. But should efforts fail to make the giant funnel system effective, there is no solid plan B to prevent potentially tens of millions of gallons of crude from causing one of the worst ever environmental catastrophes. Untold damage is already being done by the 3.5 million gallons estimated to be in the sea so far, but the extent of that harm will rise exponentially if the only solution is a relief well that takes months to drill.

Oil spill threatens Gulf Coast shores

clipped from www.ldjackson.net I am no expert on oil spills, but it is beginning to look like the oil that is leaking from the well on the ocean floor, off the coast of Louisiana, has all the makings of the largest oil spill in U.S. history. It even threatens to eclipse the oil spill off the Alaskan coast from the Exxon Valdez. There is a lot at stake with this oil spill, including the fate of thousands of birds, who are just beginning their breeding and nesting seasons on some of the outer coastal islands. Among them is the brown pelican, the Louisiana state bird. If the losses are great enough, it is possible it could be threatened and possibly go back on the endangered species list. It was taken off the list in November 2009. Oil slick to hit coast on Friday

clipped from www.reuters.com HOUSTON (Reuters) - A huge oil spill will hit the southern coast on Friday, the Coast Guard said on Thursday, and the military offered to help BP Plc contain the slick that threatens four states. The spill was "of national significance," Janet Napolitano, secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, told a news conference, adding the government will push BP to conduct the strongest possible effort to clean it up. The state of Louisiana declared a state of emergency due to the accident, which the Coast Guard said late on Wednesday was spilling five times more oil than previously estimated. BP and the Coast Guard have already mounted what the London-based company calls the largest oil spill containment operation in history, involving dozens of ships and aircraft. There are fears of serious damage to fisheries, wildlife refuges and beaches in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

"This may be the most important vote that we cast as members of this body. We have a moral obligation today, tonight to make health care a right and not a privilege," Lewis said. "This has never been about health care. This is about government," he said, arguing that the proposed legislation would destroy health care for those who are happy with the coverage they have. The Louisiana representative said he will not support the Senate bill because of its abortion language.
