At least 50 people have died in an earthquake that hit large swathes of Nepal and north-eastern India.
The 6.9-magnitude quake damaged buildings and sent residents in the Nepalese capital Kathmandu running into the streets.
It struck at 6.10pm local time yesterday and was felt also across northern and eastern India and in the capital New Delhi.


In Nepal the government said seven people had died and more than 70 were hurt. Among the victims were two men and an eight-year-old girl, who were killed when a brick wall toppled outside the British Embassy in Kathmandu.

The full extent of the damage is not immediately known because the worst-affected areas are remote and sparsely populated. Parts are now cut off by mudslides triggered by the quake.
The quake triggered at least two aftershocks of magnitude 6.1 and 5.3, and more are possible, experts have warned.

Moderate earthquake strike off Alaska islands

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - Two moderate earthquakes have struck off Alaska's Aleutian Islands but there were no immediate reports of any damage.

The U.S. Geological Survey says a 5.8-magnitude temblor struck at 11:14 p.m. Sunday and was centered near some remote islands about 1,000 miles west of Anchorage.

The USGS says a 5.4 quake hit about an hour earlier in the same general location.

Quake monitoring agencies say no tsunamis are expected and there are no reports of the quake causing damage.

WASHINGTON  — A major 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked a remote area of southwestern Pakistan early Wednesday, shaking many parts of the country and causing tremors as far away as India and the United Arab Emirates.

The quake was centered in Baluchistan province, the country's most sparsely populated area, said the United States Geological Service, occurring at 1:30 a.m. local time at a depth of some 50 miles.

Its epicenter was in a remote area some 200 miles (320 kilometers) southwest of the Baluchistan capital of Quetta, said chief Pakistani meteorologist Arif Mahmood, not far from the Afghan border.

The closest town to the epicenter was Dalbandin, with a population around 15,000 people, and is so remote that the nearby Chagai hills were the site of Pakistan's 1998 nuclear tests.
There was no word on damage in Dalbandin. But another town close to the epicenter, Karan, suffered no major damage, said Fateh Bangar, Karan's deputy commissioner. The town was some 45 miles (70 kilometers) from the epicenter, he said.
Nasir Baluch, a police officer in Karan, said several mud houses collapsed or were damaged in an area outside the town called Mashkil. There was no immediate word on casualties, but the area is sparsely populated, he said.

NEW DELHI, India (Worthy News)-- Two years after losing relatives and property to anti-Christian violence, survivors in India's Orissa state are still being pressured to "return" to Hinduism, according to a private investigation.

According to the preliminary report of a fact-finding team, "Despite the state administration’s claim of normalcy, a state of lawlessness and utter fear and sense of insecurity" is prevalent among the Christians in Kandhamal district who experienced anti-Christian violence in 2008.

The team, composed of attorney Nicholas Barla, rights activists Jugal Kishore Ranjit and Ajay Kumar Singh, visited four villages in three blocks of Kandhamal in early November.

In Bodimunda village in Tikabali, the team met a pastor who said he was closely watched after Hindu extremists forced him to become a Hindu. The pastor, whose name was withheld, said he had to convert to Hinduism to spare his aged mother, who could not have escaped the violence as she was not able to walk.

In the same village, Hindu nationalists also baned any vehicle used to transport Christians or their belongings while prohibiting Christians from obtaining basic needs.

Drug-resistant Super-Bug Found in Three States - Worthy News

A new gene that makes a certain bacteria resistant to almost all antibiotics has U.S. scientists and doctors alarmed.

So far, this new super-bug has caused people to become sick in three states in the U.S as well as Canada. The bug is also starting to pop up all over the world.

The gene has mostly been found in a bacteria that causes urinary infections.

All of the known cases seem to have been contracted by people traveling to India for medical procedures.

Medical experts are worried that people will continue to spread the bacteria via airplane all over the world.

Scientists have feared a super-bug like this one. Resistance to antibiotics is on the rise, and there aren't currently many new vaccines being developed.

Doctors warn that good hygiene is important because the bacteria can spread hand-to-mouth.

The amount of deaths caused by this new super-bug is unknown.

  SAINTHIA, India – The 22-year-old was asleep on the overnight train, headed to his distant job at a call center, when an enormous jolt awakened him and his coach flipped. He lay with his leg broken for five hours, crushed under the dead bodies of other passengers as he waited for help.
  The powerful crash between two express trains at a station in eastern India early Monday morning killed 61 people and injured scores more. The force of the crash was so intense the roof of one car was thrust onto an overpass above the tracks.
  Accidents are relatively common on India's sprawling rail network, which is one of the world's largest but lacks modern signaling and communication systems. Most crashes are blamed on poor maintenance and human error.
  It was the second major train crash in West Bengal state in two months. On May 28, a passenger train derailed and was hit by an cargo train, killing 145 people. Authorities blamed sabotage by Maoist rebels for that crash.
  Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee rushed to the site of Monday's crash and raised the possibility it was another case of sabotage. But there no immediate indication that rebels were to blame, and railway officials said the cause of the crash was unclear.

  Hindu extremists murder Christians in India

  The brutal and barbaric actions of Hindu extremists have gone on for decades in India, and Orissa has a dark history of inter-religious unrest, often triggered by Hindu suspicion of Christian missionaries. Cranmer is profoundly moved to share this plea from the Bishop of Phulbani in the Church of North India, who cries: 'I request you with tears kindly organise the prayer for us.'
  And so His Grace exhorts his readers and communicants to pray today for the persecuted Church in India, where nuns are being gang-raped, and many believers are being murdered, tortured or burned alive. Children are being hacked to pieces before their parents' eyes, and churches, community and pastoral centres, convents and orphanages have been burned down and destroyed. And mobs are terrorising believers throughout the area, marching and shouting "Kill the Christians".
  Cranmer has followed the appalling developments in Orissa via The Times, The Church Times, and other agencies, and he has to wonder why Britain's Hindu community has not condemned these acts of barbarism. Such atrocities might make one feel sympathy for the Muslims of Kashmir, who have been subject to manifestations of Hindu terrorism for decades.

  Extremist Hindu groups offered money, food and alcohol to mobs to kill Christians and destroy their homes, according to Christian aid workers in the eastern India state of Orissa.
  The U.S.-based head of Good News India, a Christian organization that runs several orphanages in Orissa — one of India's poorest regions — claims that Christian leaders are being targeted by Hindu militants and carry a price on their heads. "The going price to kill a pastor is $250," said Faiz Rahman, the chairman of Good News India.
  A spokesman for the All-India Christian Council said: "People are being offered rewards to kill, and to destroy churches and Christian properties. They are being offered foreign liquor, chicken, mutton and weapons. They are given petrol and kerosene."
  Ram Madhav, a spokesman for the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), the largest hardline Hindu group, denied the claims. "The accusation is absolutely false," he said.

The UID Authority of India will issue the first UIDs linked to a person's demographic and biometric information between August and February, and issue about 600 million such IDs over the next five years to help verify citizens quickly and cheaply. It will be a boon for companies and government agencies alike. He was just being a law-abiding citizen. He couldn't imagine his query would put him in the hospital. Using India's 2005 Right to Information (RTI) Act, which empowers any citizen to ask for information from any level of government, from village leaders to the Prime Minister's office, Kumar asked the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) why homes and shops were built on land not zoned for private construction. "Neither the police nor the people helped me," says Kumar, who was struck in the head with an iron rod, blood covering his face and shirt. And yet despite the attack, Kumar still believes that "RTI is the only tool that can bring an end to a corruption in India

Agenda of Nuclear Talks Leaves Out a New Threat

clipped from www.nytimes.com WASHINGTON — Three months ago, American intelligence officials examining satellite photographs of Pakistani nuclear facilities saw the first wisps of steam from the cooling towers of a new nuclear reactor. It was one of three plants being constructed to make fuel for a second generation of nuclear arms. The message of those photos was clear: While Pakistan struggles to make sure its weapons and nuclear labs are not vulnerable to attack by Al Qaeda, the country is getting ready to greatly expand its production of weapons-grade fuel. The Pakistanis insist that they have no choice. A nuclear deal that India signed with the United States during the Bush administration ended a long moratorium on providing India with the fuel and technology for desperately needed nuclear power plants.
