The US plans to install a Big Big Brother-style monitoring system on the computer systems

Internet - Good Or Bad?Image by Mikey G Ottawa via Flickr
If you think your computer security features are safe and cannot be hacked into. You may want to think again. If the plans they want go through and pass. Which most of it already has. The Freedom of the net may soon be a thing in the past. A day when we used to be able to enjoy all that freedom.

The US plans to install a Big Brother-style monitoring system on the computer systems of private companies and government agencies to prevent cyber-attacks from abroad.
The program, named Perfect Citizen, will rely on sensors that will be deployed in networks running critical infrastructure such as the electricity grid and nuclear-power plants.
It will be able to detect any attempt by foreign saboteurs to launch a cyber-attack .

But privacy campaigners have reacted furiously, saying that 'mission creep' will make it easy for security forces to effectively spy on normal citizens.
U.S. intelligence officials are concerned about Chinese and Russian surveillance of computer systems that control key parts of the U.S. infrastructure.
Earlier this year Google's email service, GMail, came under attack from
Chinese hackers trying to access the accounts of human rights activists
in the country.
He said that 'weapons-system blueprints are among the documents that have been compromised.'

Hawaii Law Shuns Obama Birth Doc Requests

clipped from www.newsmax.com

It's now law in Hawaii that the state government can ignore repetitive requests for President Barack Obama's birth certificate.

Republican Gov. Linda Lingle signed into law Wednesday a bill allowing state government agencies not to respond to follow-up requests for information if they determine that the subsequent request is duplicative or substantially similar to a previous request.

The law is aimed at so-called "birthers," who claim Obama is ineligible to be president. They contend the Democratic president was born outside the United States, and therefore doesn't meet a constitutional requirement for being president.

Health Department officials supported the law because the state still gets between 10 and 20 e-mails seeking verification of Obama's birth each week, most of them from outside Hawaii.

Advocates for openness in government oppose the law because they fear it could be used to ignore legitimate requests for information.

An identity for all: India ID project fights dust, doubt

MUMBAI (Reuters) - As India gears up to build the largest biometric database in the world with the aim of providing most of its 1.2 billion citizens a Unique Identification (UID), perhaps the biggest challenge is smudged fingerprints.

The UID Authority of India will issue the first UIDs linked to a person's demographic and biometric information between August and February, and issue about 600 million such IDs over the next five years to help verify citizens quickly and cheaply. It will be a boon for companies and government agencies alike.

It would give millions of Indians the means to open a bank account, buy a mobile phone, and access welfare services easily, while saving companies and government agencies the expensive and time-consuming process of verifying and establishing identities.

"The UID will hopefully enable better targeting, identification of beneficiaries, and plug leakages. If you can improve targeting by even 5-10 percent, it would be a big deal."
