SANTIAGO, Chile -- 

U.S. monitors say a magnitude-6.4 earthquake has struck just off the shore of central Chile, affecting the same area where last year's much larger earthquake set off a devastating tsunami.
Chile's emergency office says Wednesday's quake was a 6.3 and that no damage to people or buildings has been reported.
The U.S. Geological Survey says this earthquake struck just before 9 a.m. (1300 GMT) and was centered 59 miles (96 kilometers) southwest of Concepcion, the capital of Chile's Bio-Bio region.

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook southern Chile yesterday, sending thousands fleeing for higher ground in fear of a tsunami like that which ravaged the coastline last year. There were no immediate reports of deaths or damage, and Vicente Nunez, head of the National Emergency Office, said no tsunami alert was issued.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii also said no destructive Pacific Ocean-wide tsunami was expected.
Some mobile phone aerials and electrical power were knocked out in the Araucania region where the quake was centred, 370 miles (595km) south-southwest of the capital, Santiago.

SAN JOSE MINE, Chile – One by one, the miners trapped for 69 days in a dungeon that could have been their tomb climbed into a rescue capsule and made a smooth ascent to the surface Wednesday, greeted by the embraces of loved ones, cheered by joyous Chileans and watched by a captivated world.
The anxiety that had accompanied the careful final days of preparation broke at 12:11 a.m., when the stoutest of the men, Florencio Avalos, emerged from the missile-like chamber and smiled broadly after his half-mile journey to fresh air.
By midday, 15 men had been pulled from the mine in roughly 12 hours, including the oldest and youngest among the trapped. The effort was methodical and free of any significant problems, and on track to finish before sunrise Thursday.

The USGS says the quake's epicenter was 151 kilometers (94 miles) south-southwest of Concepcion, Chile, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles). Radio stations in the Bio-Bio region reported no major damages or injuries from Monday's tremor. The area has been shaken by hundreds of smaller quakes since a huge magnitude-8.8 quake hit on Feb. 27, triggering a tsunami and killing 486 people. On Sunday, a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the area, one of more than a dozen perceptible temblors since Saturday. Tens of thousands of Chileans are still living in tents or temporary huts.

Hillary Clinton fears al-Qaeda is obtaining nuclear weapons material

President Obama will call on the leaders of 47 nations today — the biggest gathering of heads of state by a US leader since the founding of the UN in 1945 — to introduce tougher safeguards to prevent nuclear material ending up in the hands of terrorists. As far back as 1998, Osama bin Laden stated that it was his Islamic duty to acquire and use weapons of mass destruction. The unprecedented gathering of 47 nations in Washington to address this issue underscores the perceived severity of the threat posed by nuclear terrorism. There will also be pressure on countries to follow the example of Chile, which has removed all of its stocks of low-enriched and highly-enriched uranium.

Strong Earthquakes Rock Chile as Pinera Takes Office

The U.S. Geological Survey measured a 7.2 magnitude quake in Chile's Libertador O'Higgins region, about 124 kilometers from the capital Santiago. It followed a magnitude 5.1 quake centered in the Arucania, Chile region, about 555 kilometers south of the capital. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the new quakes. A major 8.8-magnitude earthquake in February killed hundreds of people. The new quakes came as dignitaries gathered in the capital to witness Mr. Pinera succeed Chile's first female president, socialist Michelle Bachelet, who is barred from a second consecutive term.

More quakes hit Chile as new president takes over

clipped from news.yahoo.com SANTIAGO, Chile – A series of strong aftershocks from last month's devastating quake rocked Chile on Thursday as a new president was sworn into office and immediately urged coastal residents to move to higher ground in case of a tsunami. The strongest aftershock, with a magnitude of 6.9, was nearly as strong as the quake that devastated Haiti's capital on Jan. 12. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. President Sebastian Pinera was inaugurated at a congressional building in coastal Valparaiso before the building was evacuated as a precaution. The seven aftershocks strongly swayed buildings, shook windows and sent frightened Chileans streaming into the street. The magnitude-6.9 aftershock is the strongest since the day of the Feb. 27, magnitude-8.8 quake. It occurred along the same fault line, said geophysicist Don Blakeman at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. The USGS initially estimated the aftershock's magnitude at 7.2.

Officials say the tally of 799 dead is likely to increase in coming days as search-and-rescue crews dig into collapsed buildings and discover more bodies. While that work continued, officials also dealt with another pressing problem: looting and lawlessness in areas of central and southern Chile. A curfew was set from 6 p.m. Tuesday until noon Wednesday. "We have seen images that are, frankly, intolerable," Bachelet said. "We want to make it clear that it won't be accepted." More than 13,000 soldiers were being dispatched to secure order, Bachelet said. The threat of violence slowed the flow of aid, said Michael Black "We don't want to spend one more night in the darkness and in fear," she told CNN Chile. "We are no longer hungry, we are so scared."

Chile Was Prepared for the Quake but Not the Tsunami

The quake may be, as Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said on Sunday, "an emergency unparalleled" in the country's history. But the death toll - fewer than 1,000 so far, despite the quake's being one of the strongest ever recorded - is a tribute to Chile's remarkable preparation and response. Remarkable, that is, in terms of coping with what happened on land. Disaster officials now say the majority of Chile's fatalities may have resulted from the temblor-generated tsunami waves that slammed coastal towns like ConstituciÓn, where 350 people were killed. The quake, the seventh strongest earthquake in recorded history, hit Chile Saturday and should have shortened the length of an Earth day by 1.26 milliseconds, according to research scientist Richard Gross at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif. The computer model used by Gross and his colleagues to determine the effects of the Chile earthquake effect also found that it should have moved Earth's figure axis by about 3 inches (8 cm or 27 milliarcseconds).   The figure axis is the axis around which the Earth's mass is balanced. It is offset from the Earth's north-south axis by about 33 feet (10 meters). Strong earthquakes have altered Earth's days and its axis in the past. The 9.1 Sumatran earthquake in 2004, which set off a deadly tsunami, should have shortened Earth's days by 6.8 microseconds
