Strong Earthquakes Rock Chile as Pinera Takes Office

Two strong earthquakes shook Chile Thursday as Sebastian Pinera prepared to take office as the country's new president.
The U.S. Geological Survey measured a 7.2 magnitude quake in Chile's Libertador O'Higgins region, about 124 kilometers from the capital Santiago. It followed a magnitude 5.1 quake centered in the Arucania, Chile region, about 555 kilometers south of the capital.
There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the new quakes. A major 8.8-magnitude earthquake in February killed hundreds of people.
The new quakes came as dignitaries gathered in the capital to witness Mr. Pinera succeed Chile's first female president, socialist Michelle Bachelet, who is barred from a second consecutive term.

Chile Was Prepared for the Quake but Not the Tsunami

Global plate tectonic movementImage via Wikipedia

Luke 21 :25 And there shall be signs in the sun, and in the moon, and in the stars; and upon the earth distress of nations, with perplexity; the sea and the waves roaring; 26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after those things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven shall be shaken. 27 And then shall they see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. 28 And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

In Chile's second largest city, ConcepciÓn, the army has issued a "silence" order on some urban blocks so rescue workers can hear the possible tapping of survivors under the rubble of the massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake that hit the country on Feb. 27. The quake may be, as Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said on Sunday, "an emergency unparalleled" in the country's history. But the death toll - fewer than 1,000 so far, despite the quake's being one of the strongest ever recorded - is a tribute to Chile's remarkable preparation and response.

Remarkable, that is, in terms of coping with what happened on land. Disaster officials now say the majority of Chile's fatalities may have resulted from the temblor-generated tsunami waves that slammed coastal towns like ConstituciÓn, where 350 people were killed. And that points up the only area in which Chile and its government may have fallen short in this disaster. (See pictures of the earthquake in Chile.)

CONCEPCION, Chile —  Security forces said Monday they arrested dozens of people for violating curfew after looters sacked virtually every market in this hard-hit city and Chile's earthquake toll surpassed 700. President Michelle Bachelet promised imminent deliveries of food, water and shelter for thousands living on the streets.

"We are confronting an emergency without parallel in Chile's history," Bachelet declared Sunday, a day after the magnitude-8.8 quake — one of the biggest in centuries — killed at least 708 people and destroyed or badly damaged 500,000 homes. Bachelet said "a growing number" of people were recorded as missing.

CONCEPCION, Chile – Rescuers found signs of life in a quake-toppled building on Monday as the world offered aid to victims of a catastrophe that killed more than 700 people. Troops and police cracking down on looters arrested dozens of people for violating a curfew.

"We are confronting an emergency without parallel in Chile's history," President Michelle Bachelet declared Sunday, a day after the magnitude-8.8 quake — one of the biggest in centuries — killed at least 708 people and destroyed or badly damaged 500,000 homes.

Some coastal towns were almost obliterated, first shaken by the quake, then slammed by a tsunami that lifted whole houses and carried them inland and crushed others into piles of sticks.

Aftershocks Jolt Chile as Troops Seek to Keep Order

clipped from www.nytimes.com

LIMA, Peru — Rescue workers and government troops struggled on Monday to reach earthquake-ravaged corners of Chile still cut off by crumbled roads, fallen bridges and downed telephone lines. Meanwhile, the Chilean government asked the United Nations for emergency assistance to cope with the widespread devastation.

Aftershocks continued to rattle heavily damaged cities along Chile’s coastline, complicating rescue efforts two days after a magnitude-8.8 earthquake touched off what President Michelle Bachelet called “an emergency unparalleled in the history of Chile.”

The death toll from Saturday’s quake rose to 711
On Monday, the first of three significant temblors occurred at 3:24 a.m., with a magnitude of 4.8

Within the next 90 minutes, two more shocks hit the Maule region, south of Santiago. The first registered 4.9, and the second, with an epicenter offshore, was recorded at 5.3.
