Chilean officials and the U.S. Geological Survey say a magnitude-7.1 quake has shaken southern Chile, sending hundreds fleeing for higher ground for fear that it would generate a tsunami. (Jan. 3)

A magnitude 7.1 earthquake shook southern Chile yesterday, sending thousands fleeing for higher ground in fear of a tsunami like that which ravaged the coastline last year. There were no immediate reports of deaths or damage, and Vicente Nunez, head of the National Emergency Office, said no tsunami alert was issued.
The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Hawaii also said no destructive Pacific Ocean-wide tsunami was expected.
Some mobile phone aerials and electrical power were knocked out in the Araucania region where the quake was centred, 370 miles (595km) south-southwest of the capital, Santiago.

Magnitude 6.4 quake shakes Chile, no damages

clipped from www.google.com SANTIAGO, Chile — The U.S. Geological Survey says a magnitude-6.4 earthquake has struck off Chile's central coast. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries. The USGS says the quake's epicenter was 151 kilometers (94 miles) south-southwest of Concepcion, Chile, at a depth of 20 kilometers (12 miles). Radio stations in the Bio-Bio region reported no major damages or injuries from Monday's tremor. The area has been shaken by hundreds of smaller quakes since a huge magnitude-8.8 quake hit on Feb. 27, triggering a tsunami and killing 486 people. On Sunday, a 5.9-magnitude quake struck the area, one of more than a dozen perceptible temblors since Saturday. Tens of thousands of Chileans are still living in tents or temporary huts.

Strong Earthquakes Rock Chile as Pinera Takes Office

The U.S. Geological Survey measured a 7.2 magnitude quake in Chile's Libertador O'Higgins region, about 124 kilometers from the capital Santiago. It followed a magnitude 5.1 quake centered in the Arucania, Chile region, about 555 kilometers south of the capital. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries from the new quakes. A major 8.8-magnitude earthquake in February killed hundreds of people. The new quakes came as dignitaries gathered in the capital to witness Mr. Pinera succeed Chile's first female president, socialist Michelle Bachelet, who is barred from a second consecutive term.

More quakes hit Chile as new president takes over

clipped from news.yahoo.com SANTIAGO, Chile – A series of strong aftershocks from last month's devastating quake rocked Chile on Thursday as a new president was sworn into office and immediately urged coastal residents to move to higher ground in case of a tsunami. The strongest aftershock, with a magnitude of 6.9, was nearly as strong as the quake that devastated Haiti's capital on Jan. 12. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. President Sebastian Pinera was inaugurated at a congressional building in coastal Valparaiso before the building was evacuated as a precaution. The seven aftershocks strongly swayed buildings, shook windows and sent frightened Chileans streaming into the street. The magnitude-6.9 aftershock is the strongest since the day of the Feb. 27, magnitude-8.8 quake. It occurred along the same fault line, said geophysicist Don Blakeman at the U.S. Geological Survey in Golden, Colorado. The USGS initially estimated the aftershock's magnitude at 7.2.

Chile earthquake: 'Everyone fears aftershocks'

Although phone communication out of Chile has been difficult, people have been contacting the BBC via email and Twitter. Below are some of the responses we've been sent. The quake seemed to last more than two minutes in Santiago. Buildings seemed to resist the quake very well. It was tremendous; the buildings were literally dancing in the air; I've driven through the old downtown and there's no relevant damage, but there are some collapsed bridges. We are in Santiago. Quake lasted about thirty seconds. Buildings shook violently. Seem to all have withstood structural damage but there is broken glass. Yes, I felt it at 3:40am, we were in bed but woke up with the shaking I am in the La Reina/Las Condes area of Santiago. It's OK on our few streets - lasted about two minutes
