Volcano erupts in Iceland, spurs 50 quakes

Pyroclastic flows at Mayon Volcano, Philippine...Image via Wikipediahttp://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43121772/ns/world_news-europe
Iceland's most active volcano erupted Saturday, with a white plume shooting 18,000 feet into the air, scientists said.

The eruption was followed by around 50 small earthquakes, the largest of which measured 3.7 on the Richter Scale, according to Iceland's meteorological office.
There was a similar eruption at the same volcano in 2004.
Scientists don't believe this eruption will lead to air travel chaos like that caused by ash from the Eyjafjallajokul volcano in April 2010.
The Grimsvotn volcano is located underneath the Vatnajokull glacier in southeast Iceland.
Sparsely populated Iceland is one of the world's most volcanically active countries and eruptions are frequent.
They often cause local flooding from melting glacier ice, but rarely cause deaths.

Earthquake 'swarm' rattles Arkansas town and its residents - CNN.com

http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/12/13/arkansas.earthquakes/index.html?eref=mrss_igoogle_cnn
(CNN) -- The Arkansas Geological Survey is trying to unravel a mystery: What is causing earthquakes in the town of Guy, Arkansas?
Since September 20, the community of 549 residents north of Little Rock has experienced an almost constant shaking from 487 measurable earthquakes.
"We've had 15 today including a 3.1 (magnitude) from this morning," Scott Ausbrooks, geohazards supervisor for the Geological Survey, said Monday. "These are shallow quakes between two and eight kilometers (between one-and-a-quarter and five miles) below the surface."
While earthquakes aren't unusual in the Southeast state, the frequency is.
"This time last year we had 39 quakes total for the entire state," said Ausbrooks.
Most of the quakes in the swarm -- a localized surge of earthquakes with all of them about the same magnitude, according to the United States Geological Survey -- are so small they go unnoticed. The largest, a 4.0 on October 11, caused the only documented damage, cracking a window at a visitor's center to a state park.

Third Massive Earthquake to Hit Tonga this Week

SAMOA-QUAKE-TSUNAMI
SAMOA-QUAKE-TSUNAMI
The Island nation of Tonga has been hit by another earthquake early this morning. The quake registered a 5.8 coming on the heels of two strong quakes on October 12th. The early quakes registered a 6.1 and 5.5 magnitude on the 12th. There was no Tsunami alert from the earlier quakes.
As of this writing no Tsunami alert has been registered for the Island nation and surrounding islands. There is a high possibility that the status will change. Residents of Tonga, Samoa and surrounding islands are prepared for such disasters. Several Tsunami alerts have been registered this year.
There was no reported damage or injuries from the October 12th quakes.

Confirmed: Tornado hits Tonopah

clipped from www.abc15.com
TONOPAH, AZ - A tornado touched down in Tonopah Thursday afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.
The storm cell that hit just west of the Valley caused massive damage to at least one Tonopah neighborhood, ripping apart homes, pulling roofs off their structures, and scattering debris across the ground.
The Weather Service said Friday that a funnel cloud touched down briefly about 5:30 p.m. Thursday in the area of 335th Avenue and Lower Buckeye Road in Tonopah, which is about 70 miles west of Phoenix.
An image from ABC15.com user Jean Suttle (see attached image) shows what might be a funnel cloud in the distance. Suttle said her photo was taken Thursday afternoon from 374th Avenue and Roosevelt, not far from Tonopah.
Tracy Deadman also sent in a photo that more clearly shows a funnel cloud. She wrote that she just happened to be taking pictures of the storm as it headed east toward her house in Tonopah.

Kamchatka Peninsula
A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck Russia's Far East, the Russian Academy of Science's geophysical services on the Kamchatka Peninsula reported on Friday.
The quake hit 150 kilometers off the eastern coast of the peninsula in the Pacific Ocean at 4:00 p.m. local time [04:00 GMT].
There are no reports of damage to buildings or any casualties.
The Kamchatka Peninsula also has several active volcanoes and is part of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region where 90% of the world's earthquakes and 80% of the world's largest earthquakes occur.

European flooding

Check out the link below to see more photos.
clipped from www.boston.com
Over the past month, heavy rainfall from different storms across parts of Europe has caused massive amounts of flooding - some water moving slowly across river plains and farmland, some moving swiftly through cities and villages. Dozens have lost their lives, many thousands evacuated their homes, some repeatedly - Poland in particular is suffering its worst flooding in decades. More recently, parts of Spain and France have experienced flash floods that have carried away people and vehicles. Collected here are some images of the flooding in Europe from the past several weeks. (42 photos total)

Earthquake swarms continue in Southern California

clipped from www.latimes.com

A swarm of small earthquakes continued to occur overnight in the Big Bear Lake area.

More than a dozen quakes were recorded in the last 12 hours in the San Bernardino Mountains region, most of them small. No damage or injuries were reported.

Another swarm of small quakes hit the Santa Monica Bay on Monday, including a 3.6 and 3.7 temblor. Those quakes were felt by thousands of people, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The Big Bear quake swarm produced smaller quakes. The first quake hit about 1:30 p.m. Monday a few miles north of Big Bear City. That registered magnitude 3.2. The second quake hit about 10 minutes later, and registered 3.1.

Hundreds of people reported feeling those quakes.

Experts: No end to volcano ash in sight

clipped from www.cnn.com
Meteorologists say the dust cloud will continue to blanket northern Europe.

(CNN) -- Weather experts predicted Friday that a volcanic ash causing chaos to air traffic across Europe would affect the region well into the weekend and possibly beyond as the dust cloud continued to spread.

Scientists said it was too soon to predict when the Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland would cease spewing ash, raising the prospect of thousands more grounded flights in coming days.

Prevailing westerly winds are expected to fan the massive plume of dust from an erupting volcano in Iceland further east and north, according to predictions from the London Ash Advisory Center.

By 07:00 GMT Saturday (7 p.m. ET) the cloud traveling at up to 9,000 meters (30,000 feet) is forecast to be covering parts of Russia, Poland, Finland and other East European countries while continuing to affect the UK, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark and Netherlands.

More from Eyjafjallajokull Volcano photos

More can be seen at the link below.
clipped from www.boston.com
As ash from Iceland's Eyjafjallajokull volcano continued to keep European airspace shut down over the weekend, affecting millions of travelers around the world, some government agencies and airlines clashed over the flight bans. Some restricted airspace is now beginning to open up and some limited flights are being allowed now as airlines are pushing for the ability to judge safety conditions for themselves. The volcano continues to rumble and hurl ash skyward, if at a slightly diminished rate now, as the dispersing ash plume has dropped closer to the ground, and the World Health Organization has issued a health warning to Europeans with respiratory conditions. Collected here are some images from Iceland over the past few days. (35 photos total)
