Chinese officials reacted with disgust when Defense Secretary James Mattis announced Saturday the United States would defend Japan-controlled islands claimed by China and deploy missile defense in South Korea.
Mattis, according to The New York Times, told Japanese officials Saturday morning that the U.S. defense responsibilities of Japan expanded to the debated rocky station posts known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan.
Mattis, who made his remarks at a Tokyo news conference, said that China’s territorial declaration to nearly all of its waters “has shredded the trust of nations in the region.” Sec. Mattis discussed Article 5 of the United States-Japan treaty, which obligates the the U.S. defend Japan or its territories that it controls against an attack.
China condemned the statement made by Mattis. The chief spokesman of China’s Foreign Ministry, Lu Kang, said in a statement on its website, “We urge the U.S. side to take a responsible attitude, stop making wrong remarks on the issue involving the Diaoyu islands’ sovereignty, and avoid making the issue more complicated and bringing instability to the regional situation.”

Last year, China sent a warship to within 24 miles of the islands. President Xi Jinping of China declared much of the East China Sea to be a Chinese air defense zone in 2013, and since then China has regularly sent fighter jets to patrol the area.
At a news conference in Tokyo, Mr. Mattis cited Article 5 of the United States-Japan treaty, which commits the United States to defend Japan or territories that it administers against attack.
“I made clear that our longstanding policy on the Senkaku Islands stands — the U.S. will continue to recognize Japanese administration of the islands,” Mr. Mattis said. “And as such, Article 5 of the U.S.-Japan security treaty applies.”
Before going to Japan, Mr. Mattis went to South Korea to offer assurances to that ally about defense commitments, and China’s reaction was similar.

A shallow undersea quake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale jolted eastern parts of Indonesia on Tuesday, but no tsunami warning was issued and there were no immediate report of damage and casualties, officials said.
The quake struck at 18:03 p.m. Jakarta time (1103 GMT) with the epicenter at 163 km northwest Ambon, the capital city of Maluku province, and with the depth at 10 km under sea bed, an official of the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency told Xinhua.
Head of Maluku Disaster Management and Mitigation Agency Eka Gultom told Xinhua by phone that there were no reports of buildings damaged or those injured or killed. "The quake causes no impact, everything is fine here," she said.
The USGS reported on its website that the quake was measured at 5.8 magnitude and the Hong Kong Observatory said it was at 6.3 magnitude.

TOKYO — A magnitude-6.8 earthquake struck off Japan’s northeastern coast Friday, triggering a tsunami advisory that was later lifted. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the temblor, which rattled the area devastated earlier this year by a massive quake and tsunami.
The 2:36 p.m. (0536 GMT) quake was centered about 185 miles (300 kilometers) northeast of Tokyo and at a depth of 12 miles (20 kilometers), slightly south of where the magnitude-9.0 temblor struck March 11, Japan’s Meteorological Agency said.

The agency issued a tsunami advisory, predicting waves of 20 inches (50 centimeters) along the coast of Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures, where a nuclear plant crippled by March’s quake-spawned tsunami is located. The agency lifted the advisory about 30 minutes later.
There were no abnormalities in key equipment at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear power plant, said Chie Hosoda, an official with Tokyo Electric Power Co., the plant’s operator. She said some of the plant’s workers assigned to the coastal side of the facility temporarily retreated inside the building.

NEW YORK (AP) -- More signs of economic weakness triggered a global sell-off in stocks Thursday. The Dow Jones industrial average fell 400 points in a return to the wild swings in the market last week.
In the United States, there were reports that more people joined the unemployment line last week than a week earlier, gasoline prices contributed to higher inflation and manufacturing slowed in the mid-Atlantic.
In Europe, bank stocks slid on worries about the region's debt problems. In Asia, Japan's exports fell for the fifth straight month.
The U.S. and European economies are "dangerously close to recession," Morgan Stanley economists wrote in a report. "It won't take much in the form of additional shocks to tip the balance."
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 456 points, or 4 percent, to 10,954 at 1:55 p.m. in New York. The Dow was down as many as 528 points about a half-hour into trading.
The Standard & Poor's 500 index fell 55 points, or 4.6 percent, to 1,138. All but three of the 500 stocks in the index fell. The Nasdaq composite fell 127, or 5 percent, to 2,383.
"This is yet another stage of panic selling," said Gene Peroni Jr., a portfolio manager with Advisors Asset Management with $7.3 billion in client assets. "Investors are reacting first and asking questions later."
Last week was one of the wildest in Wall Street history. The Dow moved more than 400 points on four straight days for the first time.
But stocks had been relatively stable this week because investors were calmed by strong earnings reports and a flurry of corporate acquisition deals. The Dow had fallen 76 points Tuesday and risen four points Wednesday -- the first time that the average rose or fell by less than 100 points on two straight days in nearly three weeks.

(Reuters) - Iran has tested a new radar system, a military commander said on Wednesday, as part of a show of strength it hopes will warn Israel and the United States against any attack.On day three of a 10-day military exercise, Amir Ali Hajizadeh, head of the Revolutionary Guards' aerospace division, said the new radar system, called Ghadir, was used for the first time.
"The Ghadir radar has been designed and built to detect airborne targets, radar-evading planes, cruise and ballistic missiles and low-orbit satellites," he was quoted as saying by the student news agency ISNA.
The radar has a range of 1,100 km (680 miles) and a height of 300 km (190 miles), he said.

A second warning was issued to the extreme danger of the Bushehr nuclear reactor. It is in a very earthquake prone area and could end up like the Fukushima reactor in Japan. According to the Bible as the Day of the LORD approaches, something drastic is going to happen to drive the people out of this section of Iran. Elam is an ancient geographical location mentioned in the Bible. Today its location would be mainly in Iran with a small section in Iraq. It bordered with the ancient Babylonian Empire. The actual location of Elam would be the very northern end of the Persian Gulf and down along with the west coast of Iran. Today one of the main sections of ancient Elam would include Bushehr Province with the capital city of Bushehr. On a map of the Persian Gulf, Bushehr would be directly across from Kuwait.

Bushehr is very important today because it is the location of Iran’s nuclear facility and has the attention of the world. Thus, the physical location of ancient Elam is critical today.
It is feared that Iran would use this plant to help build nuclear weapons to destroy Israel and threaten other nations. Israel has stated that it will not allow Iran to become a nuclear power, and it is very possible Israel will attack Iran to destroy this nuclear complex at Bushehr. It is also possible that World War 3 could start over the Bushehr nuclear plant. Thus, ancient Elam has become a focal point in dealing with Israel and fits directly into God’s prophetic plan as the world heads toward the day of the LORD.
Modern Location of Bushehr
In the Bible, the word Elam seldom appears. The name was derived from Noah’s grandson from Shem (Genesis 10:22). In Genesis 14, a battle is recorded between Abraham and a confederation of Kings. Chedorlaomer was listed as the king of Elam and part of the battle. In Isaiah 11:11, Elam is listed as one of the locations the Jews will return from just prior to the Second Coming of the Lord Jesus. In Daniel 8, the prophet was in Elam.

Radioactive material has been detected in seawater around Japan's Fukushima plant, with concentration levels 240 times higher than safety limits. Scientists warn that the element, strontium, is highly dangerous to humans as it can accumulate in bones and possibly cause cancer.

For more than two weeks following the earthquake, tsunami and subsequent nuclear accident that struck Japan in March, I reported on Fukushima every day from Tokyo. Now, nearly three months later, I’ve been able to actually go there – not to the nuclear plant, but as close as 12 miles away, to the Fukushima Prefecture that surrounds the crippled reactors and gives them their name.
My first impression upon arriving was of the beauty of the place: Rice paddies line the slopes, and traditional Japanese houses sit on the hillsides where rivers and waterfalls flow. These forests rival California’s Big Sur for their grand display of nature’s serenity.
The enormous human misery inflicted by the radiation leak forms my second strongest impression. Radioactive soil in pockets of areas near Japan’s crippled nuclear plant have reached the same level as Chernobyl, where a “dead zone” remains 25 years after the reactor in the former Soviet Union exploded.
Soil samples in areas outside the 20-kilometer (12 miles) exclusion zone around the Fukushima plant measured more than 1.48 million becquerels a square meter, the standard used for evacuating residents after the Chernobyl accident, Tomio Kawata, a fellow at the Nuclear Waste Management Organization of Japan, said in a research report published May 24 and given to the government.
Radiation from the plant has spread over 600 square kilometers (230 square miles), according to the report. The extent of contamination shows the government must move fast to avoid the same future for the area around Tokyo Electric Power Co.’s Fukushima Dai-Ichi plant as Chernobyl, scientists said. Technology has improved since the 1980s, meaning soil can be decontaminated with chemicals or by planting crops to absorb radioactive materials, allowing residents to return.
“We need to finish this treatment as quickly as possible, within three years at most,” Tetsuo Iguchi, a specialist in isotope analysis and radiation detection at Nagoya University in central Japan, said in a telephone interview. “If we take longer, people will give up on returning to their homes.”
Radiation levels similar to nuclear bomb test site
One soil sample taking 25 kilometers away from Fukushima showed Cesium-137 exceeding 5 million becquerels per square meter. This level, of course, makes it uninhabitable by humans, yet both the Japanese and U.S. governments continue to downplay the whole event, assuring their sheeple that there's nothing to worry about. By their logic, since all the people are sheeple anyway, as long as the area is safe enough for sheep, it's also safe enough for the human population.
Both Japan and the U.S. have made huge efforts to raise the limits of allowed radiation exposure in foods and beverages. This was, of course, a deceitful tactic to try to reclassify radiation contamination as somehow magically being "safe" by redefining it.
The outright lying and tactics of deception that have been used to try to downplay the severity of the radioactive fallout from Fukushima are nothing less than despicable. In a time when radiation threatens the safety and food supply of hundreds of millions of people, we are getting nothing but a Fukushima whitewash.
Fukushima is now far worse than Chernobyl ever was and yet we're all being told it's no problem and that the government has it all under control. I ask: How is 5 million becquerels per square meter not a problem? It's amazing that we even got this information, considering how frequently TEPCO claims its sensors and meters aren't working (basically any time they get a reading that's "too high").
The US Federal Government reports Japan nuclear radiation has now been detected in the drinking water in 20 US cities.
In my last report on radiation in the drinking water the Feds acknowledged detecting Japan nuclear radiation in the drinking water in 14 US cities. Today the EPA has updated the list with new results and the number of US cities where radiation has been found in the drinking water has grown to 20 US cities.

Eiichi Nagano, 90, an activist who protested the dangers of the Hamaoka plant, stood near the plant on Friday.
If such a quake struck, electrical power could fail, along with backup generators, crippling the cooling system, the lawyers predicted. The reactors would then suffer a meltdown and start spewing radiation into the air and sea. Tens of thousands in the area would be forced to flee.
Although the predictions sound eerily like the sequence of events at the Fukushima Daiichi plant following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, the lawsuit was filed nearly a decade ago to shut down another plant, long considered the most dangerous in Japan — the Hamaoka station.
It was one of several quixotic legal battles waged — and lost — in a long and largely futile attempt to improve nuclear safety and force Japan’s power companies, nuclear regulators, and courts to confront the dangers posed by earthquakes and tsunamis on some of the world’s most seismically active ground.
The lawsuits reveal a disturbing pattern in which operators underestimated or hid seismic dangers to avoid costly upgrades and keep operating. And the fact that virtually all these suits lost reinforces the widespread belief in Japan that a culture of collusion supporting nuclear power, including the government, nuclear regulators and plant operators, extends to the courts as well.
Yuichi Kaido, who represented the plaintiffs in the Hamaoka suit, which lost in a district court in 2007, said that victory could have led to stricter earthquake, tsunami and backup generator standards at plants across the nation.
“This accident could have been prevented,” Mr. Kaido, also the secretary general of the Japan Federation of Bar Associations, said of Fukushima Daiichi. The operator of the plant, Chubu Electric Power Company, temporarily shut down Hamaoka’s two active reactors over the weekend, following an extraordinary request by Prime Minister Naoto Kan.

Tokyo Electric Power sought the Japanese government’s help in compensating victims of radiation leaks at its damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant due to the large amounts of money involved.
Tokyo Electric President Masataka Shimizu asked on Tuesday for the national government’s assistance as it faces a bill of trillions of yens as payouts to residents and local governments affected by the nuclear crisis.
In addition to the compensation package, the embattled utility firm has to spend billions of yen to decommission the reactors at its damaged facility, while company revenue is down because of a lower volume of electricity generated by its plants.
Shimizu promised Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Bann Kaieda to raise as much funds as it could to pay for the victims’ compensation, but asked assistance from the government to cover the total cost.
He did not say how much help the utility firm would seek from the national government. Analysts estimate the compensation claims may reach over $100 billion (JPY 8.1 trillion).
Aside from asking assistance from Tokyo, the power firm has started to sell assets. Company officials, including Shimizu and Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata, have given up their salaries to raise funds for the compensation package. Tokyo Power also reduced board members’ compensation by 50 percent, managers’ pay by 25 percent and ordinary employees’ wages by 20 percent.
BREAKING NEWS: BEIJING, May 1-The Tokyo Electric Power Company is to build a makeshift bulwark around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, in case bigger aftershocks might further harm the already damaged structures.
The whole construction is set to be completed by mid June.

Officials now say it will probably take longer than 9 months but let's hope not...or we are really screwed and this disaster will turn out to be much worse than any other nuclear disasters before or all of them combined!
