Tokyo Electric Power sought the Japanese government’s help in compensating victims of radiation leaks at its damaged Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant due to the large amounts of money involved.

Tokyo Electric President Masataka Shimizu asked on Tuesday for the national government’s assistance as it faces a bill of trillions of yens as payouts to residents and local governments affected by the nuclear crisis.
In addition to the compensation package, the embattled utility firm has to spend billions of yen to decommission the reactors at its damaged facility, while company revenue is down because of a lower volume of electricity generated by its plants.
Shimizu promised Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano and Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry Bann Kaieda to raise as much funds as it could to pay for the victims’ compensation, but asked assistance from the government to cover the total cost.
He did not say how much help the utility firm would seek from the national government. Analysts estimate the compensation claims may reach over $100 billion (JPY 8.1 trillion).
Aside from asking assistance from Tokyo, the power firm has started to sell assets. Company officials, including Shimizu and Chairman Tsunehisa Katsumata, have given up their salaries to raise funds for the compensation package. Tokyo Power also reduced board members’ compensation by 50 percent, managers’ pay by 25 percent and ordinary employees’ wages by 20 percent.

BREAKING NEWS: BEIJING, May 1-The Tokyo Electric Power Company is to build a makeshift bulwark around the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant, in case bigger aftershocks might further harm the already damaged structures.
The whole construction is set to be completed by mid June.

Please share this information and the link to my channels, as I plan on seeing this through 'till it's finally entombed.

Officials now say it will probably take longer than 9 months but let's hope not...or we are really screwed and this disaster will turn out to be much worse than any other nuclear disasters before or all of them combined!

TOKYO – A pair of thin robots on treads sent to explore buildings inside Japan's crippled nuclear reactor came back Monday with disheartening news: Radiation levels are far too high for repair crews to go inside.
Nevertheless, officials remained hopeful they can stick to their freshly minted "roadmap" for cleaning up the radiation leak and stabilizing the Fukushima Dai-ichi plant by year's end so they can begin returning tens of thousands of evacuees to their homes.
"Even I had expected high radioactivity in those areas. I'm sure (plant operator Tokyo Electric Power Co.) and other experts have factored in those figures when they compiled the roadmap," Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano said.
Officials said Monday that radiation had spiked in a water tank in Unit 2 and contaminated water was discovered in other areas of the plant. They also described in detail for the first time the damage to fuel in three troubled reactors, saying pellets had melted.
That damage — sometimes referred to as a partial meltdown — had already been widely assumed, but the confirmation, along with the continued release of radiation from other areas, serves to underscore how difficult and how long the cleanup process will be. In fact, government officials themselves have acknowledged that there are still many setbacks that could crop up to slow down their timeline.
Angry at the slow response to the nuclear crisis and to the catastrophic earthquake and tsunami that caused it, lawmakers tore into Prime Minister Naoto Kan.
"You should be bowing your head in apology. You clearly have no leadership at all," Masashi Waki, a lawmaker from the opposition Liberal Democratic Party, shouted at Kan.
"I am sincerely apologizing for what has happened," Kan said, stressing the government was doing all it could to handle the unprecedented disasters.
TEPCO's president, Masataka Shimizu, appeared ill at ease as lawmakers heckled and taunted him.
Workers have not been able to enter the reactor buildings at the stricken plant since the first days after the cooling systems were wrecked by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami that left more than 27,000 people dead or missing. Hydrogen explosions in both buildings in the first few days destroyed their roofs and scattered radioactive debris.

A magnitude 6.6 tremor shook buildings in Tokyo and a wide swathe of eastern Japan on Monday evening, killing one man, knocking out power to 220,000 households and causing a brief halt to water pumping to cool three damaged nuclear reactors.
The epicentre of quake, the biggest of several sizable aftershocks on Monday, was 56 miles east of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex at the centre of the crisis.
The biggest tremor forced engineers to postpone plans to remove highly contaminated water from one reactor, but nuclear safety officials said work had resumed by nightfall.
The government announced earlier that because of accumulated radiation contamination, it would encourage people to leave certain areas beyond its 12-mile exclusion zone around the plant.
Children, pregnant women, and hospitalised patients should stay out of some areas 12-19 miles from the nuclear complex, Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano told reporters.

Image via WikipediaNow, I'm not sure who is totally in charge here. Let alone what they are doing. It's been how long now? This goes to show that not just these companies are involved but also the Governments seem to not care much about Human life let alone Ocean or plant life.
What in the World is stopping them from sealing it all up with concrete? To stop all the leaking in the air, ocean and soil? This has become a serous lack of care to life on our planet as well as no care for human life at all.

TOKYO –  The operator of Japan's stricken Fukushima nuclear plant said Monday it planned to dump thousands of tons of radioactive water into the Pacific, as the government was accused of covering up the extent of radiation levels.

"We have no choice but to release water tainted with radioactive materials into the ocean as a safety measure," Yukio Edano, the government’s chief spokesman told a new conference.

The Jiji press agency reported that a TEPCO spokesman said the 11,500 tons of water were only weakly radioactive and that the release would take place "as soon as necessary preparations are made."

The broadcaster NHK reported Monday that the Japanese government withheld the release of data showing that radiation exceeded safe levels more than 18 miles from the plant, beyond the 12-mile evacuation zone.

Computer projections taken March 16 showed that people from as far away as 18 miles from the nuclear plant would be exposed to more than 100 millisieverts of radiation if they were outdoors for 24 hours between March 12 and 24.

Workers used a milky white dye Monday to frantically try to track path of highly radioactive water flowing out into the ocean, but it is not clear how much water has leaked from the pit so far and where exactly it has gone.

A crack in a maintenance pit found over the weekend was the latest confirmation that radioactivity continues to spill into the environment. The leak is a symptom of the primary difficulty at the Fukushima Dai-ichi complex: Radioactive water is pooling around the plant and preventing workers from powering up cooling systems needed to stabilize dangerously vulnerable fuel rods.

With the recent catastrophe at Fukushima nuclear power plant Northeast of Tokyo, I felt it important to give advice and tips on surviving any "fallout" or radioactive particles that may reach your location.
Before I start this hub though, let me first say that my prayers and my heart is with you, the Japanese people. As a very young man, my family and I lived just outside Tokyo. The people of Japan have morals that many American people don't. Crime is very low in Japan. People trust other people. We need to help them as much as we possibly can. In the Japanese spirit, I wrote this Haiku:

Don't Believe All You Hear

First and foremost, realize that the Government and most media will downplay everything to do with this meltdown. The reason: mass chaos. It is protocol that no matter the severity, they will downplay it, but I won't.
It has been determined that radioactivity has shown up in the milk coming from cows in the State of Washington. If this is true, we have it floating above the whole United States.
It could be in our food supply, water supply and even on clothing and other items.
You will never be able to protect yourself completely, but the purpose of this hub is to at least give you the tips to make your odds much better of surviving.

SOMA, Japan – Dangerous levels of radiation leaking from a crippled nuclear plant forced Japan to order 140,000 people to seal themselves indoors Tuesday after an explosion and a fire dramatically escalated the crisis spawned by a deadly tsunami.
In a nationally televised statement, Prime Minister Naoto Kan said radiation had spread from the four stricken reactors of the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant along Japan's northeastern coast. The region was shattered by Friday's 9.0-magnitude earthquake and the ensuing tsunami that is believed to have killed more than 10,000 people, plunged millions into misery and pummeled the world's third-largest economy.
Japanese officials told the International Atomic Energy Agency that the reactor fire was in a fuel storage pond — an area where used nuclear fuel is kept cool — and that "radioactivity is being released directly into the atmosphere." Long after the fire was extinguished, a Japanese official said the pool might still be boiling, though the reported levels of radiation had dropped dramatically by the end of the day.
Late Tuesday, officials at the plant said they were considering asking for help from the U.S. and Japanese militaries to spray water from helicopters into the pool.
That reactor, Unit 4, had been shut down before the quake for maintenance.
If the water boils, it could evaporate, exposing the rods. The fuel rods are encased in safety containers meant to prevent them from resuming nuclear reactions, nuclear officials said. But they acknowledged that there could have been damage to the containers. They also confirmed that the walls of the storage pool building were damaged.

The confirmed death toll from Friday's twin disasters was 686, but the government's chief spokesman said it could exceed 1,000. Devastation stretched hundreds of miles (kilometers) along the coast, where thousands of hungry survivors huddled in darkened emergency centers cut off from rescuers, electricity and aid.
The scale of destruction was not yet known, but there were grim signs that the death toll could soar. One report said four whole trains had disappeared Friday and still not been located.
