Following the tsunami warning, many in the town of Cilacap, closest to the quake's epicenter, poured into the grand mosque. When word finally came that the threat of a big wave had passed, they erupted in cheers, embraced one another or fell to their knees in thanks.

"We were very scared after seeing what happened in Japan - and also Aceh, of course," said Sukitno, a resident. "But God listened to our prayers. He spared us!"

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.7 quake that hit just after 3 a.m. was centered 200 miles (318 kilometers) off southern Java and 15 miles (24 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

Moderate earthquake hits North India

An earthquake of moderate intensity hit North India on Monday evening. According to the Indian Meteorological Department the quake was of 5.7 magnitude on the richter scale.
According to a Met department official the epicentre was in the Indo-Nepal Border near Uttarakhand, which lies in the seismic zone.

63 die, dozens injured in Indian temple stampede

This is just one of the results of having Big Government rule and keeping the people poor. While higher rulers keep all the money the people are left fighting for food to eat.

Nearly all the victims were women and children. The stampede was so intense it knocked down a gate at the compound surrounding the temple in the small town of Kunda, on the northern plains of Uttar Pradesh state. "How could this happen in such a holy place?" cried Phool Chand Saroj, a 48-year-old farmer whose wife, daughter and grandmother were killed in the stampede. "If they had been more careful about letting in the crowds this would not have happened." The crush of people turned into a stampede that killed 63 and injured 44, government official Ashok Kumar said. Gudal, a 38-year-old farmer who uses only one name, wept over the death of her 7-year-old daughter, Ranjana.
