Following the tsunami warning, many in the town of Cilacap, closest to the quake's epicenter, poured into the grand mosque. When word finally came that the threat of a big wave had passed, they erupted in cheers, embraced one another or fell to their knees in thanks.

"We were very scared after seeing what happened in Japan - and also Aceh, of course," said Sukitno, a resident. "But God listened to our prayers. He spared us!"

The U.S. Geological Survey said the magnitude-6.7 quake that hit just after 3 a.m. was centered 200 miles (318 kilometers) off southern Java and 15 miles (24 kilometers) beneath the ocean floor.

Moderate earthquake hits North India

An earthquake of moderate intensity hit North India on Monday evening. According to the Indian Meteorological Department the quake was of 5.7 magnitude on the richter scale.
According to a Met department official the epicentre was in the Indo-Nepal Border near Uttarakhand, which lies in the seismic zone.

Strong quake shakes Aceh 7.4

AP/Heri Juanda An earthquake with a potential of triggering tsunami jolted Aceh around 1 p.m. on Sunday, stirring panic among residents. The quake, measuring 7.2 on Richter scale, shook the western coast of Aceh, with epicenter of the temblor located at 66 kilometers southwest of Meulaboh at a depth of 30 kilometers beneath the see floor, according to the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. No damages or casualties were reported following the quake, which was also felt in the provincial capital of Banda Aceh. Newsportal tempointeraktif.com reported the tremor lasted almost five minutes. Over 1,000 houses in Simeulue and Aceh Singkil regencies were damaged when a 7.7-magnitude quake rocked Aceh early last month.
