Texas To Require Sonograms Before Abortions

(CNN) -- Women seeking an abortion in Texas will have to view a picture of the embryo or fetus and hear a description of its development before having the procedure, under a law that takes effect Sept. 1.
The bill stirred some controversy in Texas, but it easily passed through the state House and Senate, both of which are controlled by Republicans. It was signed into law Thursday by Republican Gov. Rick Perry.The law says that at least 24 hours before an abortion is performed, women must undergo a sonogram, a procedure that uses ultrasound to create an image.
The doctor, then, is required to give, "in a manner understandable to a layperson, a verbal explanation of the results of the sonogram images, including a medical description of the dimensions of the embryo or fetus, the presence of cardiac activity, and the presence of external members and internal organs," the law states.There are some exceptions, including pregnancies that resulted from sexual assault, incest or other violations of law.Women seeking abortions also are exempt if the fetus has been found to have an irreversible medical condition that will cause a disability."Governor Perry was pleased to sign this important legislation, which bolsters our efforts to protect life by ensuring Texans are fully informed when considering such an important decision," said his deputy press secretary, Lucy Nashed.

Thai police arrange bags containing fetuses found today at the morgue of a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. More than 2,000 illegally aborted fetuses were discovered.

Thai police have arrested three people after the remains of more than 2,000 aborted fetuses were found in a Buddhist temple in Bangkok. One of those charged was paid about $16 for each fetus collected from illegal abortion clinics.
Abortion is illegal in Thailand except in cases when delivery would harm the mother or the pregnancy resulted from rape.
Police found 1,654 fetuses today in two new mortuary rooms and 348 earlier in the week in another room, the Bangkok Post reports. The remains were wrapped in white plastic bags, and some had been at the temple for a year.
Buddhist temples in Thailand perform cremation ceremonies and store bodies in refrigerated areas.

Spanish Senate approves new abortion law

The new law allows the procedure without restrictions up to 14 weeks and gives 16- and 17-year-olds the right to have abortions without parental consent. The senate's passage of the bill Wednesday gives it final approval. The bill brings the country in line with its more secular neighbors in northern Europe is the latest of a series of bold social reforms undertaken by Socialist Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero, who first took office in 2004 and has ruffled feathers among many in the traditionally Catholic country. "The government wants to do away with one of the pillars of Spanish society, which is the family," she said.

Obama's ‘New’ Health Care Plan Would Use Tax Dollars to Pay for Abortions

What is Planned Parenthood really doing in Haiti?
