Dozens of Coptic Christians have clashed with Egyptian riot police in Cairo following a bomb attack outside a church in Alexandria that killed 21 people.
Protesters hurled rocks at security forces, who later charged into the crowd swinging truncheons. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
President Hosni Mubarak blamed yesterday’s church attack, which injured 96 people, on “foreign elements” and has urged Christians and Muslims to stand united. The Interior Ministry said it increased security around churches nationwide “in light of the escalating threats from al-Qaeda to many countries,” according to a statement on its website.
Sectarian violence and discrimination have worsened in Egypt in recent years, say Copts, a charge backed by the State Department’s annual International Religious Freedom report. Copts account for about 10 percent of Egypt’s population of 80 million people.

Iraqis vote on future, await 'new beginning'

Election observers said the most open and competitive election since the overthrow of Saddam Hussein went smoothly. People emerged smiling from polling stations with purple-stained fingers, the signature Iraqi method to prevent vote fraud, and said they hoped for a better future. "We have suffered from the security situation, the lack of jobs and poor basic services," said Usra Abdullah, 48, in Baghdad. "If it means that I die while casting my vote then I die." Poll openings at 7 a.m. were met with numerous blasts. In an explosion near Sadr City, rescue workers said they could hear women and children under the debris screaming for help. The Interior Ministry said at least 35 people had died in the violence. Iraqis living in the United States also voted in six U.S. cities over the weekend.

Israel OKs 1,600 new homes in east Jerusalem

The Interior Ministry announced the construction plans just as Biden was wrapping up a series of warm meetings with Israeli leaders. There was no immediate reaction from the vice president. Relations between Israel and the Obama administration have been chilly precisely because of the settlement issue. The U.S., like the Palestinians and the rest of the international community, believe that Israeli settlements built on lands claimed by the Palestinians undermine peace prospects, and President Obama has been more outspoken on the issue than his predecessors. But Palestinian negotiator Saeb Erekat said the move was destroying trust needed to go forward with the new round of indirect peace talks
