Syria Blocks New Border Protest as Death Toll Rises to 23

Syrian police blocked dozens of pro-Palestinian protesters from approaching the Israeli frontier on Monday. The toll of demonstrators killed trying to break through into the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights rose to 23.
Syrian police set up a pair of checkpoints, including one a half-mile (kilometer) from the border. Nearly 20 protesters, some waving Syrian flags, began walking down a hill leading to the border when two police officers blocked their advance by extending their arms.
Protesters passed Syrian and U.N. outposts without impediment on Sunday and during a similar border rush three weeks ago, and it was not clear why Syrian security forces intervened Monday.
The repeated attempts to challenge the borders play into widespread Israeli fears that the Palestinians will not make do with a state on lands captured in 1967, but want to take over all of historic Palestine, including present-day Israel.
Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak suggested that the Syrian regime might have instigated Sunday's border unrest -- and similar unrest three weeks ago -- to deflect attention from its crackdown on its own protesters. At least 35 Syrians died in a government crackdown in the country's north over the weekend.
Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Yigal Palmor said Israel would file a complaint to the U.N. later Monday "concerning the Syrian regime's cynical manipulation of its own citizens in order to generate violent incidents on the border."

Israel is monitoring two Iranian warships about to pass through the Suez Canal for Syria and warn they might act.
The Israeli Navy will be tracking the two warships as they cross the Suez Canal for the Mediterranean Sea, according to defense officials.
Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement that it had alerted "friendly nations" about the warships, Reuters reports.
Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says that "Israel cannot ignore these provocations," according to ynetnews.com.
"Unfortunately, the international community is not ready to deal with Iran's repeated provocations," Lieberman said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Lieberman added that the warships were "a provocation that proves Iran's nerve and self-esteem is growing from day to day."

AFP - Two Iranian naval ships crossed the Suez Canal on Tuesday into the Mediterranean sea for the first time since the 1979 Islamic revolution on a training mission that Israel calls a provocation.
"They are now in Mediterranean waters," a canal official said.
The patrol frigate Alvand and support ship Kharg are reportedly bound for Syria, a destination that would take them near Israeli waters.
The 1,500-tonne Alvand is normally armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-tonne Kharg has a crew of 250 and facilities for up to three helicopters, Iran's official Fars news agency has said.
Both ships were built in Britain during the 1970s for Iran, which ordered them before the Islamic revolution.

Gaza rocket strikes Negev, as Israel vows to respond - Haaretz - Israel News

  • "A Qassam rocket fired by Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip exploded in the western Negev on Monday, a day after an Israel Air Force strike killed three Islamic Jihad men posed at a launching ground in the coastal territory. There were no casualties or damages reported in the incident on Monday. Israeli security forces were summoned to the area to locate where the rocket had exploded. The IAF strike Sunday came hours after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed a "powerful response" to recent rocket and mortar shell attacks from the coastal territory. The strike targeted a cell as its members, which included a senior Jihad field commander, were launching rockets at Israel. Advertisement Four mortar shells were also fired at Israel from Gaza on Sunday, but they exploded on the Palestinian side of the border. Addressing an increase of rocket fire into Israel from Gaza, Defense Minister Ehud Barak on Monday advised Gaza's Hamas rulers to "watch their step, and not to cry crocodile tears if they force [Israel] to take action."
