Syrian forces shoot dead 30 in protests: lawyer | Reuters

(Reuters) - Syrian security forces shot dead at least 30 demonstrators on Friday during protests that broke out across the country in defiance of a military crackdown which has killed hundreds of people, a rights activist said.
Other activists reported demonstrations across Syria, from Banias and Latakia on the Mediterranean coast to the oil producing region of Deir al-Zor, Qamishli in the Kurdish east and the Hauran Plain in the south, one day after the United States told President Bashar al-Assad to reform or step down.
Syria has barred most international media since the protests broke out two months ago, making it impossible to verify independently accounts from activists and officials.
"No dialogue with tanks," said banners carried by Kurdish protesters who shouted "azadi," the Kurdish word for freedom, rejecting promises by the authorities for a national dialogue, a witness said.
Protests erupted in Damascus suburbs and the capital's Barzeh district, where two witnesses said security forces fired at protesters and chased them in the streets.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which is based in Britain, said at least 831 civilians had been killed since the uprising against autocratic rule erupted in the southern city of Deraa nine weeks ago. It said at least 10,000 people had been arrested, including hundreds across Syria on Friday.
Some protesters were calling for freedom, activists said, while others called for "the overthrow of the regime," the slogan of uprisings which toppled leaders in Egypt and Tunisia.
OBAMA SPEECH
Human rights lawyer Razan Zaitouna said 12 people were killed in the town of Maaret al-Numan, south of Syria's second city Aleppo. Tanks had entered the town earlier in the day to disperse protesters.
She said another 11 were killed in the central city of Homs.
She said seven others were killed in Deraa, Latakia, the Damascus suburbs and Hama, where Assad's father, the late president Hafez al-Assad, sent the military to crush an armed Islamist uprising in the 1980s.
Amateur video uploaded by activists, who said it was filmed in Homs, showed scores of marchers scattering as gunfire erupted. A police car was left burning in the street.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said it had names of at least 21 protesters killed on Friday.
The United States, which has condemned the crackdown as barbaric, imposed targeted sanctions against Assad this week and President Barack Obama said on Thursday Syria must move away from "the path of murder and mass arrest."
"The Syrian people have shown their courage in demanding a transition to democracy," Obama said. "President Assad now has a choice: He can lead that transition or get out of the way."
Despite strong words from the White House, the West has so far taken only small steps to isolate Assad when compared to its bombing campaign against Libya's leader Muammar Gaddafi, also accused of killing protesters.

Israel is monitoring two Iranian warships about to pass through the Suez Canal for Syria and warn they might act.
The Israeli Navy will be tracking the two warships as they cross the Suez Canal for the Mediterranean Sea, according to defense officials.
Israel's Defense Minister Ehud Barak said in a statement that it had alerted "friendly nations" about the warships, Reuters reports.
Israel's Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman says that "Israel cannot ignore these provocations," according to ynetnews.com.
"Unfortunately, the international community is not ready to deal with Iran's repeated provocations," Lieberman said, according to the Jerusalem Post.
Lieberman added that the warships were "a provocation that proves Iran's nerve and self-esteem is growing from day to day."

AFP - Two Iranian naval ships crossed the Suez Canal on Tuesday into the Mediterranean sea for the first time since the 1979 Islamic revolution on a training mission that Israel calls a provocation.
"They are now in Mediterranean waters," a canal official said.
The patrol frigate Alvand and support ship Kharg are reportedly bound for Syria, a destination that would take them near Israeli waters.
The 1,500-tonne Alvand is normally armed with torpedoes and anti-ship missiles, while the larger 33,000-tonne Kharg has a crew of 250 and facilities for up to three helicopters, Iran's official Fars news agency has said.
Both ships were built in Britain during the 1970s for Iran, which ordered them before the Islamic revolution.

Turkey's attacks on Christians is way out of hand.

clipped from news.yahoo.com

ANKARA, Turkey – A Roman Catholic bishop was stabbed to death in southern Turkey on Thursday, a day before he was scheduled to leave for Cyprus to meet with the pope, officials and reports said.

Luigi Padovese, 63, the apostolic vicar in Anatolia, was attacked outside his home in the Mediterranean port of Iskenderun. The killing was not believed to be politically motivated.

The Vatican-affiliated Asia News agency cited unnamed witnesses as saying the driver appeared to be "depressed, violent and threatening," in recent days.

The Vatican spokesman, the Rev. Federico Lombardi, told The Associated Press in Rome that the Vatican felt "immense pain, consternation, (and) bewilderment" over the death and noted that it showed the "difficult conditions" of the Catholic community in the region.

The killing is the latest in a string of attacks in recent years on Christians in Turkey, where Christians make up less than 1 percent of the 70 million population.

Get your plan ready, Mr Obama

clipped from www.economist.com

As talks look set to resume, Barack Obama must prepare a big plan of his own

EVEN by the gloomy standards of the misnamed Middle East peace process, the prospect of a lasting deal between Jews and Arabs in that little strip of land between the Jordan river and the Mediterranean has seemed remoter than ever. Yet the latest news offers a rare glimmer of hope. After more than a year of sullen stalemate, indirect talks between the two sides look set to resume (see article). Sadly they are likely to flounder unless the Americans do more than just nudge them along.

Sooner rather than later, Barack Obama must present his own detailed plan for peace. He must take the lead in providing Israel with the only guarantee of its lasting security: the creation of a proper state for the Palestinians.
Mr Obama should also propose a NATO force under American command to monitor and secure a Palestinian border and ensure that a Palestinian state has limited military power. And he should come to Israel and sell his plan directly to Israelis, explaining why two states, including a shared Jerusalem, is the only way, in the long run, to make Israel safe. Mr Obama must dispatch the canard that he is hostile to the Jewish state. Being impatient with Israel does not mean he disregards it: he has repeatedly guaranteed Israel’s security. But if the chance of building two co-existing states is not to fade, the Obama plan cannot be delayed much longer.
