Report: US warships stationed off Iranian coast

  As unconfirmed reports of an imminent Israeli strike on Iran's nuclear facilities pick up steam in the Middle Eastern media, a US-based strategic intelligence company has released a chart showing US naval carriers massing near Iranian waters.
  The chart, published by Stratfor and obtained by the Zero Hedge financial blog, shows that over the last few weeks a naval carrier -- the USS Harry S Truman -- has been positioned in the north Indian Ocean, not far from the Strait of Hormuz, which leads into the Persian Gulf. The carrier joins the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was already located in the area. The chart is dated June 23, 2010.

  An article in the Gulf Daily News, largely dismissed by Western observers, did not mention any Saudi involvement but said Israel is preparing to attack Iranian targets from the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Georgia.
  The claims that Israel may be preparing for an assault on Iranian nuclear facilities were strengthened this weekend by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who told reporters at the G8 summit in Canada that G8 leaders "believe absolutely" that Israel will "probably" strike Iran.
  "Iran is not guaranteeing a peaceful production of nuclear power [so] the members of the G8 are worried and believe absolutely that Israel will probably react preemptively," Berlusconi said, as quoted at Ha'aretz.

Ali Shirazi, a senior aide to supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, described the naval exercises as a specific response to Washington's "nuclear threats." He said: "The most important message from the exercises in the face of American nuclear threats is that we will strongly resist them." The new vessel was tested in the Strait of Hormuz, the narrow, strategically important waterway between the Gulf and the Gulf of Oman. Nearly 40 percent of world's seaborne oil shipments pass through this waterway. Iranian military officials have previously warned that if their country were attacked, their forces would hit back by blocking the Strait of Hormuz. The military exercise also marked the 31st anniversary of the Guards, which were set up soon after the Islamic revolution of 1979.

clipped from news.yahoo.com TEHRAN, Iran – Iran launched large-scale war games in the Persian Gulf oil route of the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, holding the military exercises earlier than usual after the country's leaders expressed new concerns that the U.S. has made a veiled nuclear threat against the Islamic Republic. Tehran was angered by President Barack Obama's announcement earlier this month of a new U.S. nuclear policy in which he pledged America would not use atomic weapons against nations that do not have them. Iran and North Korea were pointedly excluded from the non-use pledge, and Iranian leaders took that as an implicit threat. Iran has been holding military maneuvers, dubbed as The Great Prophet, in the strategic waters annually since 2006 to show off its military capabilities. Iran has declared many advances in its military industries and sciences to demonstrate self-sufficiency despite sanctions and attempts by the U.S. and its allies to isolate the country over its nuclear program.
