Blizzard cuts power to hundreds of thousands - Weather - msnbc.com

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/41383879/ns/weather

A colossal blizzard roaring across a third of the country paralyzed the nation's heartland with ice and snow, leaving motorists stranded for hours and shuttering airports and schools as it barreled toward the Northeast.
In Ohio alone, more than 200,000 homes and business were without power as trees downed by snow, ice and wind cut power lines. In the Chicago area, some 123,000 utility customers saw their electricity cut overnight. Crews had reduced that to 59,000 by midday.

In Texas, frigid cold forced the power grid operator to start rolling blackouts of up to an hour to nearly three million homes.
In the Northeast, Boston saw heavy snow Tuesday followed by rain on Wednesday and then the likelihood of iced-over streets by nightfall. Several building roofs collapsed due to the weight, though no injuries were reported.

Attorney General: Suspects Detained in Times Square Bomb Plot

clipped from www1.voanews.com
Attorney General Eric Holder testifies before the House Judiciary Committee's oversight hearing on the Department of Justice on Capitol Hill in Washington, 13 May 2010
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder says several people were taken into custody during raids in the northeastern United States in connection with this month's failed Times Square car bombing in New York City.  Holder faced questions from congressional lawmakers about the Obama administration's national security policies and counter-terrorism funding for New York City.
"Just this morning, we executed search warrants in several locations in the Northeast in connection with the investigation into the attempted bombing," he said. "Several individuals who were encountered during those searches have been taken into federal custody for alleged immigration violations."
"These searches are the product of evidence that has been gathered in the investigation since the attempted Times Square bombing and do not relate to any known immediate threat to the public or active plot against the United States," he added.
