Hillary Clinton, the US Secretary of State, said the measures would discourage North Korean aggression but China responded angrily accusing America of "aggravating regional tensions". Mrs Clinton said that the new sanctions would limit the purchase and sale of arms, and freeze the assets of Pyongyang's isolated leadership, which is accused of allowing millions of the country's people to starve. Meanwhile China, North Korea's only ally in the region, expressed concern over joint US-South Korean naval exercises off the Korean Peninsula which are due to begin on Sunday and will last four days. A total of 20 warships and submarines, including the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington, as well as 100 aircraft and 8,000 service personnel will take part.

President Lee Myung-bak vowed "stern action" for the provocation following the release of long-awaited results from a multinational investigation into the March 26 sinking near the Koreas' tense maritime border. North Korea, reacting swiftly, called the results a fabrication, and warned that any retaliation would trigger war. It continued to deny involvement in the sinking of the warship Cheonan. South Korea and the U.S., which has 28,500 troops on the peninsula, could hold joint military exercises in a show of force "If the (South Korean) enemies try to deal any retaliation or punishment, or if they try sanctions or a strike on us .... we will answer to this with all-out war,"

US, SKorea to test military in signal to North

clipped from news.yahoo.com WASHINGTON — The Obama administration on Monday announced plans for two major military exercises off the Korean peninsula in a show of force aimed at North Korea, which has been blamed by investigators for a deadly torpedo attack on a South Korean warship. The White House called U.S. support for South Korea "unequivocal" and said in a statement that President Obama had directed military commanders to work with the South "to ensure readiness and to deter future aggression." North Korean leaders have denied responsibility and warned against any retaliation, but Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton on Monday blamed the North for the crisis. The sinking was South Korea's worst military disaster since the Korean War, which started 60 years ago and ended in a cease-fire in 1953. But no formal peace treaty was ever signed, and more than 28,000 U.S. troops remain stationed in the south, a critical regional ally.

N. Korea Says It Is Ready to 'Blow Up' U.S.

clipped from www.foxnews.com SEOUL, South Korea —  North Korea's army said Monday it is ready to "blow up" South Korea and the U.S., hours after the allies kicked off annual military drills that Pyongyang has slammed as a rehearsal for attack. South Korea and the U.S. — which normally dismiss such threats as rhetoric — began 11 days of drills across South Korea on Monday morning to rehearse how the U.S. would deploy in time of emergency on the Korean peninsula. The U.S. and South Korea argue the drills — which include live firing by U.S. Marines, aerial attack drills and urban warfare training — are purely defensive. North Korea claims they amount to attack preparations and has demanded they be canceled. The communist country has issued similar rhetoric in the days leading up the drills. On Sunday, it said it would bolster its nuclear capability and break off dialogue with the U.S. in response to the drills. The North has demanded a lifting of the sanctions and peace talks with the U.S

N. Korea's Kim Jong Il sends nuclear envoy to China

clipped from www.usatoday.com SEOUL (AP) — North Korea's Kim Jong Il reportedly dispatched his top nuclear envoy to Beijing on Tuesday to discuss restarting nuclear disarmament talks, a day after pledging Pyongyang's commitment to a nuclear-free Korean peninsula. Kim made the disarmament pledge during a meeting Monday with a high-level envoy from Beijing at the start of a week of diplomacy designed to get the six-nation nuclear talks back on track. A high-level U.N. envoy also flew to Pyongyang on Tuesday for a four-day trip. North Korea has made clear it wants U.N. sanctions lifted and a peace treaty with Washington formally ending the 1950-1953 Korean War before it returns to the disarmament talks. Pyongyang cites the U.S. military presence in South Korea as its main reason for building up its nuclear weapons program. Washington says Pyongyang must come back to the talks first before any discussion about political and economic concessions.
