U.S. military forces are “closely monitoring” an Iranian ship bound for Yemen that is said to contain aid for the warring factions in that country, according to multiple Pentagon officials.
The aid ship is reported to be accompanied by at least two Iranian warships also in the region, where Iran and the United States are supporting opposite sides in the conflict between rebel forces and the Yemeni government.
Western nations suspect that Iran has been using so-called aid ships to help deliver weapons and other military supplies to the Yemeni rebels.
The Iranian aid ship is expected to arrive on Thursday. The Pentagon has been “closely monitoring” the ship’s movements, according to a senior Pentagon official.
Another Defense Department spokesman said that the United States continues “to monitor the activity in the Gulf of Aden with respect to the Iranian humanitarian aid ship,” which will be subject to inspections by the United Nations.
Iran claims that the ship currently bound for Yemen contains pharmaceuticals and medial equipment. It has agreed to let international inspectors examine the cargo before proceeding to Yemen.
U.S. officials have encouraged Iran to deliver aid in a transparent manner.

SANAA (Reuters) – Thousands of Yemenis took to the streets of Sanaa Thursday to demand a change of government, inspired by the unrest that has ousted Tunisia's leader and spread to Egypt this week.
Reuters witnesses estimated that around 16,000 Yemenis demonstrated in four parts of Sanaa in the largest rally since a wave of protests rocked Yemen last week, and protesters vowed to escalate the unrest unless their demands were met.
"The people want a change in president," protesters shouted, holding signs that also demanded improvements to living conditions in Yemen, the Arab world's poorest country.
President Ali Abdullah Saleh, a key ally of the United States in a war against a resurgent al Qaeda wing based in Yemen, has ruled this Arabian Peninsula state for over 30 years.
"If the (ruling) party doesn't respond to our demands, we will escalate this until the president falls, just like what happened in Tunisia," said protester Ayub Hassan.
A few dozen policemen with batons silently watched the protests, which ended calmly as demonstrators left to chew qat, a mild stimulant leaf widely consumed in Yemen in the afternoon.
Yemen's ruling party ran a competing pro-government protest that gathered only a few hundred supporters, witnesses said.
Yemen, in the shadow of the world's top oil exporter Saudi Arabia, is struggling with soaring unemployment and dwindling oil and water reserves. Almost half its 23 million people live on $2 a day or less, and a third suffer from chronic hunger.
Mohammed al-Sharfy, a student protester at the Sanaa University rally of around 10,000 protesters, said economic disparities needed to be addressed.
"I am here to say no to corruption. We need to end this trend of graduating thousands of university students each year with no jobs, while officials and their kids take everything."

LONDON (Reuters) – A bomb found on board a cargo plane at a British airport last month could have exploded over the eastern seaboard of the United States if it had not been defused, British police said on Wednesday.
Al Qaeda's Yemen-based wing has claimed responsibility for sending two U.S.-bound parcel bombs that were intercepted in Dubai and Britain in October.
The bombs, addressed to synagogues in Chicago, were found in computer printer cartridges.
The device found in Britain was taken off a cargo plane at East Midlands Airport north of London on October 29.
"Forensic examination has indicated that if the device had activated it would have been at 10:30 hrs BST (0930 GMT) on Friday, 29 October 2010," London police said in a statement.
"If the device had not been removed from the aircraft the activation could have occurred over the eastern seaboard of the U.S.," they said.
British Prime Minister David Cameron said last month he could not rule out that the East Midlands bomb may have been intended to explode over Britain.

In an audio recording posted online, terrorist commander Mohammed Sayeed al-Omda said Al-Qaeda will soon have a fighting force of 12,000 soldiers based in the cities of Aden and Abyan. Omda issued a threat to continue attacking Yemeni troops. “This is a message to the Yemeni government forces and National security service: Our swords are ready and we are going to cleanse the land,” he declared. Al-Qaeda poses a real and immediate threat to the Yemeni government, according to United States Marine Corp General James Mattis, who is charged with heading US forces in the region. At his nomination hearing Tuesday Mattis told the Senate Armed Services Committee that Yemen has been pushed “to the breaking point.” Yemeni President Ali Abdallah Saleh has dealt with crises “through negotiation and by co-opting his opponents,” Mattis said, adding “there are signs his ability to exert control is waning.”

Online Islam Magazine Teaches Bomb-Making Skills, Targets Anyone Involved

Its cover features an image of a silhouetted man with a rifle under the headline "May Our Souls Be Sacrificed For You!," an article attributed to radical US-Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki. The "Make a Bomb" article notes that a device made in "one or two days could be ready to kill at least ten people," while one made in a month "could kill tens of people." "What to Expect in Jihad" offers advice for those who decide to take the fight abroad. It also suggests that would-be mujahedeen (holy warriors) bring a friend with them, and that they learn as much as possible about local culture before travelling.

Terror Attacks Against U.S. At All-Time High

Yemen declares end to war with Houthis

"We can say the war is over," Saleh told Al-Arabiya in the interview, referring to the war in the north that has raged on and off since 2004. An Saleh said that the successful implementation of a February 12 ceasefire with the fighters was a "sign that the war has ended and that this is not just a passing truce." He also added that there were positive signs of the fighters'' commitment to ending the war such as removing landmines, opening roads, removing roadblocks and releasing prisoners. Yemen had said on Thursday it would free Shi'ite fighters prisoners within days under the truce deal, a day after the fighters released at least 170 government soldiers and tribesmen who fought alongside the state. The next wave of terrorists may include Western women, possibly Canadian, with forged documents.
