PositiveID's Latest Human Chip-Implant Scare Story: "Medical Identity Theft"

clipped from industry.bnet.com

When PositiveID (PSID), the company that makes implantable microchips that grant access to patients’ online medical records, acquired the credit monitoring and identity theft company SteelVault, it was never quite clear how the two business would mesh together. Recently, however, PositiveID (formerly known as VeriChip) has indicated that it believes the two business should segue into one another via protection against medical identity theft, which, it claims, accounts for seven percent of all identity theft.

After all, who really wants their online medical records stored in the same place and accessed by the same chips as their credit rating and social security number? The answer is that about 20,000 people have already signed up for PositiveID’s NationalCreditReport.com protection services.
That “7 percent” statistic is interesting. A recent survey by the Ponemon Institute found that only 5.8 percent of ID theft cases involve medical identity theft.

Explosives Theft Qualifies As Near-Miss for USA

clipped from biggovernment.com

Imagine tons of explosives being stolen in Mexico and then transported by truck across the border into the United States. Could it happen? Over the weekend, it did. Almost.

On Friday, according to an article in the Latin American Herald Tribune, 18 tons of industrial explosives were stolen from a cargo container during a robbery along the Monterrey-Saltillo Highway in the northern Mexico state of Nuevo Leon. According to subsequent reports, Mexican officials located and recovered the stolen explosives within hours. The thieves, however, remain at large.

But should Americans rest easy now? Not after this near-miss event.

According to officials with the Mexican industry association, Canacar, thefts from cargo trucks on Mexico’s highways increased 40 percent last year.

“Too many safety and security issues have yet to be resolved. Those issues certainly haven’t improved in the past year,

'Biometric law will make identity theft harder'

Effective use of biometric data could have prevented the apparent theft of Anglo-Israelis’ identities, MK Meir Sheetrit (Kadima), the architect of the country’s Biometric ID Law, and a former minister of intelligence services, told The Jerusalem Post Thursday evening.
Sheetrit said the identification documents – identity cards and passports – that would come into use as a result of his law would “be impossible to forge.”
“People attacked the law because they were afraid that someone could ‘break in’ to the biometric database and steal identities,” said Sheetrit, arguing that it would be harder, not easier, to do that once the law went into effect.
“Someone could steal a biometric identity card, but they simply could not make their fingerprint match the one stored in the government’s databases,” he said.
“Once we have the smart chip in passports and identification cards, we will finally be part of the developments that we are beginning to see throughout the world,”
