Rights Groups Condemn Sudanese National Election Conditions

Just a quick note here. Is it just me or does anyone else notice that Obama has something to push on the entire world?

clipped from www1.voanews.com Human rights groups are sharply criticizing the Sudanese elections, even though there are three more days of voting.     The Enough Project, Save Darfur Coalition, Genocide Intervention Network and Humanity United held a joint teleconference Monday.   “The national elections are a tremendous lost opportunity for Sudan,” says John Norris, head of the Enough Project at the Center for American Progress.     The Obama administration has a special envoy for Sudan, General Scott Gration.  He took part in efforts to get the elections back on track when main opposition parties dropped out of the vote. Mark Lotwis, acting president of the Save Darfur Coalition, wants President Obama to take a firm stand on the elections. The rights groups plan to hold daily briefings this week on the latest developments in the Sudanese elections.

That invasion was triggered after Georgian troops attacked pro-Russian separatists in the breakaway republic of South Ossetia. In the fighting that ensued, each side offered conflicting figures on how many people died. On Saturday night, the pro-government Imedi TV in Georgia broadcast what it called a "simulation" of what a fresh invasion would look like. And the broadcast ended with a note that the events in it were not real. However, the show did not run any on-screen notes during the half-hour broadcast to alert viewers that what they were watching was not real. Consequently many were alarmed. "I understand the position of the journalists," she said in a statement. "I understand that it is possible to make such projects, but it mustn't impact the population of the country.
