MANILA — Several lakeside towns in the Philippines on Monday were struggling to cope with mountains of rotting fish that were killed by a sudden drop in water temperatures at the weekend.
The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources said more than 750 tonnes of fish had died since Friday in Taal Lake near Manila, hitting several towns whose economies are heavily reliant on the fishing industry.
Scientists said the onset of the rainy season led to a sharp drop in water temperatures that depleted oxygen levels in the lake.
Most of those killed were milk fish and tilapia being commercially bred in cages along the lake's shores.
"There are just so many dead fish," said Zenaida Mendoza, mayor of Talisay, one of the worst affected towns.
"Fishermen are hauling them manually using their boats, and bringing them ashore. But the rotting smell is overpowering and could pose a health risk."
She said sanitation and health officials were working flat out to dispose of the dead fish, although many remained exposed to the open air due to a lack of suitable sites to bury the hundreds of tonnes of carcasses.
Volcanologists said the incident was not related to recent activity of Taal Volcano, which lies in the middle of the lake and has been rumbling for over a month and is among the deadliest of the country's 23 active volcanoes. More »

The dead fish on Millers pond were first spotted yesterday.
Officials say the cause of death is winterkill. The DEC says winterkill happens when ice and snow prevent sunlight from entering the pond.It prevents aquatic plants from producing oxygen, which kills the fish.

Environment News: Millions of Dead Fish Appear in California Marina

http://www.newsy.com/videos/millions-of-dead-fish-appear-in-california-marina
Is it a fish apocalypse? Millions of dead fish suddenly appeared in a marina in Redondo Beach, California.

KTLA has the video.

“You can see that shot right there, just fish everywhere that we look down here. And it is all, not only through the channel way here, but all up against the boats... these fish are everywhere here and again these fish are all dead for reasons we just don’t know here so that will be investigated certainly by oceanography folks and other people down here.”

The anchovies, sardines, mackerel and other species showed up Tuesday morning in King Harbor Marina. No one is sure why the fish died, but USA Today reports there is a theory. A coordinator at the marina says they may have suffocated.

“...the fish apparently swam into the harbor to escape a red tide, a naturally occurring event that can poison fish or starve them of oxygen... [H]igh winds apparently kept the fish from leaving the harbor and they all crushed up against the harbor wall, where they used up the oxygen and suffocated.”

And Contra Costa Times and ABC report - the clean up has become somewhat of a challenge.

First Birds Fall, Now 100,000 Fish Dead in Arkansas

http://www.aolnews.com/2011/01/03/first-birds-fall-now-100-000-fish-dead-in-arkansas/?icid=main%7Caim%7Cdl1%7Csec1_lnk3%7C193267
Thousands of dead fish have turned up in an Arkansas river just days after 3,000 birds mysteriously dropped dead from the sky, but authorities say the deaths are not related.

An estimated 100,000 dead drum fish are floating along a 20-mile stretch of the Arkansas River and washing up on the river's banks near the town of Ozark in the northwestern part of the state.

The dead fish were discovered just after 3,000 red-wing blackbirds fell from the sky in the town of Beebe, more than 100 miles from the site of the dead fish. Officials, who tripled the early estimates of the number of dead birds, said the bird deaths may have been caused by lightning or by stress from fireworks and said they were unrelated to the fish kill.

Fish kills happen every year, but kills of this size are relatively rare. Hundreds more drum fish are sick and have been sent to the University of Arkansas for testing.

BREAKING - Piranhas loose in Opry Mills

clipped from wwww.examiner.com

In a story filed by Teresa Weakley for the ABC affiliate, WRKN, in Nashville, Metro Nashville police say the fish tank at the Aquarium restaurant burst during the flooding and the marine life escaped.

Floodwaters inundate mega shopping complex Opry Mills in Nashville.

The fish are mostly saltwater species and did not survive the 'freshwater' flooding.

Apparently, however, one species did and it is the piranha. It can survive in freshwater. So, if you're on cleanup detail at Opry Mills, where water is neck deep in places, watch out for one mean fish.

Death of Caveman ends an era in Idaho

Known as the "Salmon River Caveman," Richard Zimmerman lived an essentially 19th century lifestyle, a digital-age anachronism who never owned a telephone or a television and lived almost entirely off the land.

"He was in his home at the caves at the end, and it was his wish to die there," said Connie Fitte, who lived across the river. "He was the epitome of the free spirit."

Few knew him by his given name. To friends and visitors to his jumble of cave-like homes scrabbled from a rocky shoulder of the Salmon River, he was Dugout Dick.

Most, like Zimmerman, came from someplace else. Drawn by Idaho's remoteness and wild places removed from social pressures, they came and spent their lives here, leaving only in death.

"I have everything here," he said. "I got lots of rocks and rubber tires. I have plenty of straw and fruit and vegetables, my dog and my cats and my guitars. I make wine to cook with. There's nothing I really need."

He lived in a cave by choice
